Torrential rainfall on May 15 left several parts of Sribhumi in Assam submerged under knee-deep water, disrupting daily life and raising fresh concerns over the region’s vulnerability during the monsoon season.

After hours of uninterrupted downpour, multiple roads and residential areas across the town witnessed severe waterlogging, making movement difficult for commuters and residents alike. Low-lying areas were among the worst affected as rainwater accumulated rapidly, creating flood-like conditions in several localities.

The situation turned more alarming when a large crack emerged along the embankment of the Kushiara River near the Charbazar area. This led to panic among nearby residents, who feared that continued rainfall and soil erosion could lead to a possible collapse of the riverbank.

Locals claimed that despite the seriousness of the situation, officials from the concerned departments had not visited the affected site even hours after the crack appeared. Residents expressed frustration over the delay in response, saying the lack of immediate action heightened anxiety in the area.

Reacting strongly to the incident, newly elected Karimganj MLA Zakaria Ahmed criticised the authorities for their delayed response and urged prompt measures to address the growing concerns of residents.

With forecasts predicting more rainfall in the coming days, people in vulnerable areas remain apprehensive about further deterioration of the situation.
