A section of the Muslim community in Sribhumi has decided not to sacrifice cows during Eid this year, opting instead for goat sacrifice while adhering to existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintaining communal harmony in the area.
Residents of the Settlement Road locality in Sribhumi town said the decision was taken in view of the longstanding sense of brotherhood shared between members of different communities in the locality.
Speaking on the matter, Abdul Hakim Choudhury, a resident of Settlement Road, said the community has always prioritised peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among people of all faiths. He stated that, in keeping with this spirit of harmony, families in the area have decided to sacrifice goats instead of cows during Eid celebrations this year.
Choudhury further said that religious leaders in the community had also been encouraging people for a long time to opt for goat sacrifice in place of cows. Following this guidance, residents intend to continue the practice in the coming years as well.
He added that goat production in the Barak Valley remains limited, due to which animals are being brought from Lanka to meet the demand ahead of Eid. According to community members, each individual will sacrifice one goat and distribute the meat among poor and needy families as part of the observance.
