My dad was a machinist and mechanic who lived in the Bronx for many decades. He frequently found sewing machines, vacuum cleaners, busted bicycles, and other machines and appliances that people had discarded. He would always take them home, repair them (and even made the missing parts if he was able) and distributed them to neighbors, many of whom were recent immigrants. Some of them were able to set up little businesses of their own out of their apartments, and others were just happy to have a bike, vacuum cleaner, lamp, etc. that was lovingly restored by my dad.
