The difficult thing to measure is how many crashes DON'T happen because of self-driving cars. You'd need a lot of data on the number of miles driven in self-driving mode and the number of crashes / injuries / deaths in self-driving mode to compare against the underlying rate. And you have to compare against the right underlying rate, for example comparing against the sorts of drivers that would buy a Tesla but don't have one rather than just all drivers. Not defending self-driving mode, just saying it's difficult to get an objective view.
