Handy Haversack: The last line of this excellent piece on WFMU and freeform from listener Elena links to a couple of jeremiads from Irwin from almost fifty years ago on the nature of and need for freeform, and what's crucial about it in this context is that freeform has to be more than music. It's not just playing the non-hits (though give me more two Barry Manilow records played at the same time at the wrong speed, please). Speech -- and other nonmusic things -- is a crucial part. Techtonic deepens the freeform commitment of the station by a tremendous amount.

Way to go, Mark! It's an ethos!
