so my brother just texted me asking to get him a CD from Bandcamp. I'm guessing it's because he doesn't want to use Spotify for privacy purposes (and maybe paypal too)

An interesting point from The Dawn of Everything is that over the past 100,000+ years of our existence, only those periods of human political experimentation that involved oppression and top-down command left things like stone monuments and sepulchers. When we have enjoyed equality and commonality, we have not left our marks in the same way. So another note that tech is the new form of human oppression.

Great convo. I'm training to be a legacy specialist (focus: family archives) and this is such an important convo. Thank you Mark!

As I told you, I got a very troubling diagnosis in early 2020. Thinking about it calmly I realized I was potentially going to be erased off the face of the Earth. My conclusion was start yanking table cloths at the party before it was too late. Thus self-creation that's been methodically saved in the WFMU archive.
Well, I didn't die. So now I've got to live down the monster I created.

There are stewards of the digital past outside of the big tech profit model. It's fairly common for academic librraries to have digital preservationists. They work with born digital content. They preserve information from obsolete tech.

This scenario is not a "big tech problem". This is a psychological problem of a grieving person.

I really appreciate this conversation and thinks it is important. At the same time history shows that most everyone will be forgotten. In modern times, not everyone had an obit in the newspaper, not everyone's name is on a gravestone or plaque, eventually these fail too. Ex: info on headstones erode over time, not all newspapers that run obits were saved, microfilmed, then digitized.

IMHO re: Evil Dead: if you’re not a horror fan, you can just watch Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn by itself — it’s a brilliant horror-comedy classic, and it retells the events of the first movie in its first 5-10 min. much more entertainingly than the first movie does it!
