Hi listeners! Let me know if you have any questions for the Luddite Club members!

2/3 of the Perrin Family:
Kudos young people! Of course Kindle is Amazon... the Library is a wealth of books and so much more. Rock on and thanks for the inspiration.
The worst crowd experience I ever had was at a reunion show of a band I loved in the 90s. The young members of the audience stood in groups and looked at their phones. Then the people my age (40s/50s) who were by themselves on their phones! That bummed me out so bad!

Their focus is on tech. Your focus should be elsewhere seeing as these kids are minors.

I saw a movie about a camp where all the kids went without phones called No One Sleeps In The Woods Tonight, but then there was a monster.

@Mark: I'd love to know how their choice has affected their real world friendships. Do they spend more time with friends? Do they feel their relationships with each other are different than those of their peers?

TheDerek:
Sex is an innate trait in our DNA. Consummation between humans is a form of communication but the lizard brain says "MATE". Abstaining from sex has nothing to do with questioning technology.

I’m curious if they have a hard time adjusting to no GPS, that would be a lot harder for me to give up than any sort of social media

joe_rosevear:
Question for the Luddite club: I know you call yourself "Luddites", but you don't actually shun technology, right? Wouldn't it be smarter to embrace technology, but shun addictive behaviors--like addictive use of smart phones?
6:29pm
OceanBeachSF:
Does The Luddite Club have any tips or resources for pre-teen kids to embrace this philosophy and lifestyle? I love what they’re doing but I am not sure where to seek this out in the San Francisco area. The school club idea is great.
I'm sure it still is. TheDerek explained my thoughts more eloquently.

GC in Bmore:
I think the West Virginia town might be Green Bank? Or maybe it’s near the Greenbrier Hotel complex? I have a friend in SETI who goes there periodically to use the telescope and yes I think he has to ditch his phone etc.
Me, I enjoy a decidedly non digital environment. Wood stove, Hammond organ and Leslie cabinet, no Wi Fi at home, and frequent use of public transit. Hooray for these kids!

Shoutout to Brooklyn Public Library :-) Hey, Mark! Huge fan of the Luddite Club.
When I was in the ARMY, map reading & navigation was a requisite skill. It also was a diminishing skill, it was a frequent priority in training exercises. So grateful for that training, I never get lost now & always keep a map handy
Sexual attraction is an evolutionary trait a primordial instinct to seek a mate. A couple seeking to start a family, reproduction is a evolutionary trait. but through that evolution humans have enjoyed sex, but sex is a primordial instinct to reproduce. It can be used as a distraction, but it not a focus in practicing Luddism

And this will probably just sound like a plug for a personal favorite hobby of mine, but I highly recommend... the wristwatch!
An actual, regular, quite possibly purely mechanical wristwatch, or a quartz one is fine as long as it isn't Internet- or device- connected, and only shows you the time of day and possibly the date and day of the week.
That way, if you're interested in what time it is, you just look at the watch on your wrist – you don't get tempted to pull out the addiction device and potentially get sucked in.

I like watches for both aesthetic and practical reasons.
Aesthetically... the watch is a small focused arena for visual and mechanical design, and I really like them as objects.
But also, they have a genuine practical value to help people avoid getting sucked into the phone.
