Oh, Hi Mark!
:
How has everyone been dealing with the snow?
♥
:
Hi ultra, Christina, Bas, chresti, TDK60, Deano, and traven - and great to see you here live, Wendy :)
♥
:
i think you retain less from reading an e-book than a print/paginated… book…the page breaks in a hard copy book seems to lend itself to human consciousness whereas the e-books constant flow seems more geared to a bot reading

Was getting the soup tomatoes in the oven. Just read the NYT op-ed you link to. Nonsurveillance link (wink emoticon!) here: archive.ph...

Snowed in and getting educated. Thanks, Mark. This looks new. College educators see students not being able to read and comprehend books.

How you hanging in? Sending solidarity from BK.

Did you A/B the content in this book?
🤖

:
↳
Handy Haversack @6:14
Thanks Handy. We here are still in 'believe it when we see it' mode regarding any pullback. Daily business as usual.
I have friends in the suburbs who've asked me if I know of orgs near them needing volunteers, and they're friends I would've never imagined stepping up without seeing the hardship firsthand. I didn't need a kick in the pants to keep helping but it is inspiring!

@Mark Hurst, 2 weeks ago I drove to my therapy appt with my phone in airplane mode, not knowing what cell-tower spoofing I'd be driving through or Webloc device, etc. Curious if that even makes a difference. But as a fellow MPLS resident said, "if we're gonna be on a list, let's DDoS the hell out of it"

Remember JG Ballard's 'Subliminal Man" in the 60's? I can't pump gas without a screen yelling at me...

best silver lining out of all of this: thousands of people radicalized to find out that volunteering is good, and that any temp above -10F is Actually Fine

In short, we are our choices.

I've listened with full attention.. but i don't get the point.

Can I say somethin' about destiny? Screw destiny! If this evil thing comes, we'll fight it and we'll keep fightin' it until we whup it. 'Cause destiny is just another word for inevitable, and nothing's inevitable as long as you stand up, look it in the eye, and say, "You're evitable!"

So right. If you can't march in the snow do something else. Give blood, sort donations at your food bank or drive someone to a medical appointment.
You will feel better.
♥
:
Hmmmmm. If it isn't a failure of will, what is it? Everyone's a victim of their device?
♥
:
Such a great interview. And timely for me personally. Thank you, Mark.

Yes. Abandon those systems. What does Mark say?

This convo makes me think of Brian Merchant's "Blood in the Machine" (great book + substack)

True. But that's par for the course these days, it seems.

I love where Schmidt is taking this: do things with people on a regular basis, and mutual-aid and solidarity emerge.

I love sitting down with seed catalogs by my wood stove in January. And paper copy Lancaster Farming weekly.
It takes my best attention to read these.
:
Hilarious (or not) that he mentioned knitting patterns as Ravelry and more have been extraordinary for craftivism fostering gathering and drawing attention. 🧶

to get this movement going it's going to take some good Tik Tok videos, but keep them short
