Robots will be needed for anarcho-communism—or if enough humans can't break their addiction to hiërarchy, democratic communism—to work decently.

As for emotional stuff, I'm both {high-functioning autistic} and picky enough that I very rarely find a human interesting and straight-forward enough to make their company superior to being alone. I never mistake a robot for a sentient being, but I don't hold that against them.

One of the points she makes which I think is fascinating is that in the old days, everyone said what separated humans from machines was intelligence. Now that machines are on the verge of supplanting human intelligence, the focus has shifted to the intangible "soul" as the differentiator (“these AI bots may be as smart as Einstein, but dammit, they don’t have a soul!”). in this respect, we are back to early Christian theology, in a lot of ways.

"I, Robot" was a book of short stories where the 3 laws were introduced. One story was based on time or space travel that would transport a person but would technically 'kill' them in transit. I know there are plenty of problems to overcome to implement such a safety protocol (e.g. the trolley problem) but we need to be dealing with such issues of public safety. someone has to have a check on Dr. Frankenstein.

good question. my *guess* would be that we’ll invent new language to describe those “beings”. and i think that’s still a way off. why wouldn’t that “consciousness” continue to exist “in the cloud,” even when the machine its wandering around in gets zapped?
