I still have a lot of parts that are waiting for the right project.↳ kirk from berkeley @6:06
Hi Kirk! I'm an old friend of Brian Dewan's which is why I posted that Dewanatron link up there.↳ kirk from berkeley @6:06
Kirk! Thanks so much for joining us!↳ kirk from berkeley @6:06
Wait. If yr really the SAME Kirk, give us a spoiler from this interview. But don’t spoil it too much for us. Thx↳ Joey C says @6:08
I got a Raspberry Pi this week and already have it running a LAMP stack (powerful enough website)↳ herb.nyc @6:05
Coming from a dude that does have mechanical skills, you have not been exposed to that. mechanical skill require repetition. If you can type, you can weld 6:12pmI saw something terrible on a paper plate under the subway two days ago. I won’t say what it was but it was in the corner and ummm it was bad
↳ TheDerek @6:12
Thx! Am an excellent typist! 6:13pm↳ PaulRobeson1925 @6:12
It had a story to tell, but only if it was given wire and magnets!↳ kirk from berkeley @6:13
Thx. But you’ve said too much; we know the ending. Well, you meant well↳ Bas NL @6:12
I believe it! 6:14pm↳ newton @6:13
There are big magnets made to feed to cows to pull bits of metal they accidentally eat into a (safer) ball .. kind of hard to believe: www.iflscience.com...↳ mndave @6:14
a pooper plate speaker perhaps.↳ kirk from berkeley @6:12
Brian did a show last week, take a look: greenkill.substack.com... 6:18pm↳ kirk from berkeley @6:18
or 556 (two 555s on a chip)↳ kirk from berkeley @6:06
Hi Kirk!! I am building a pinball machine from scratch. I am currently working on a prototype at scale. I can fabricate all necessary parts & wire the bumpers. My main issue is I want to program music & program it to play music when it hits one of the bumpers. I know, tall order. I am an excellent solderer so that wont be an issue either. Would one of your classes possibly help me or at least set me up on the right path↳ dale @6:25
Same for landline telephony! 6:26pm↳ Webhamster Henry @6:25
i have a big new roll, maybe 500 feet. isn't that too small a guage to be able to plit and work with?↳ Webhamster Henry @6:28
Ha! Do you miss soldering sometimes?↳ cosmic matrix @6:26
I got schematics for the Elka Synthex, if that helps? And i might give some guidance...↳ zachary @6:28
My eyesight and fine motor skills aren't what they used to be! But with some support, I can still get some wok done. But I don't have facilities for surface mount stuff.↳ Bas NL @6:29
oooh oooh oooh! thanks BAS NL! I have the schematics too, they seem to be mostly correct! ;) Dude, I’d love to discuss with you sometime if you have a moment!↳ cosmic matrix @6:31
sent u my contact info↳ tim @6:18
It would not surprise me.I've read that Howard Devoto & Pete Shelley met at a tech college where they were both trying to build synths from instructions in a monthly magazine .
Bernard Sumner was also trying to this too.
Chris Carter built the 'gristliser' effect boxes for TG.
& then there's Conny Plank
↳ cosmic matrix @6:32
Yes, do!↳ MAL @6:26
Well that is really cool ...take it you have seen the Theremin Doc:
Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey
1993
PG
1h 23m
There are a lot of crazy circuits out there.
Reminds me of early Casper Electronics from Chicago.
↳ kirk from berkeley @6:26
Oh the treasures that passes through your hands for repair. You must have come across some classics. A friend of mine suggested a rasberry pi. im not against pre-recorded music. The theme is of a 60s psych rockband. I'm not against using digital components.↳ morphe' @6:33
how much leon theremin bio is in the doc?↳ tom tom the pipers son @6:34
A whole lot. He was still alive while it was being made!↳ zachary @6:34
I know the Casper Electronics guy! He lives a few towns away. Super nice fellow.↳ Webhamster Henry @6:30
Yeah. I need to do a little surface mount worked. Destroyed that area of the area removing too much. Ha!I have some kits in the basement to do with the family.
That's great you can do it with a bit of support, still. Any circuits you have been wanting to build?
6:35pm↳ tom tom the pipers son @6:34
That is what it is about ... not tech talk ... his life ... well worth watching ...↳ cosmic matrix @6:35
his name is Peter Edwards.↳ zachary @6:35
I have a whole lot of weird new-old and rescued stock parts from the founder of Circuit Bending Reed Ghazala.↳ cosmic matrix @6:35
Really!? That's awesome. Never met him. I remember reading about him whatever it was ago. Decade or more possibly.Circuit bending is the best.
↳ Webhamster Henry @6:35
right, lived into 90's...forgot... i know some of his story...wireless security systems, cryogenics, but would like to know more.... i'll rent it↳ Webhamster Henry @6:36
Super cool. I used to read Experimental Musical Instruments magazine…recognized his name from there↳ zachary @6:36
He was last living in the Czeck Republic working for some synth company. Now he’s around here. Still building (and performing w/) cool shit.↳ morphe' @6:36
ah, was wondering if it was more about clara rockmore....↳ cosmic matrix @6:37
That wasn't a real magazine, was it?↳ cosmic matrix @6:37
I was the only experimental software builder that was featured in EMI (www.echonyc.com... )↳ zachary @6:35
I unwittingly ordered some surface mount pcbs about the time I really started needing reading glasses. Got through it but in no hurry to squint at a burning board again anytime soon.Fuck you Panasonic, I'll throw the oven off a bridge before I spent another cent on this piece of crap.
↳ tom tom the pipers son @6:38
there was another doc around the mid 90s about clara, saw it at film forum↳ ultradamno @6:39
)↳ zachary @6:37
lol I think I still have one of those lying around…that I hadn’t bent yet! I discovered that there’s a whole list of naughty words the thing won’t say! It’s fun trying to figure out they are!↳ Franco Twinkie @6:39
you just need to short the capacitor with a long insulated screwdriver.↳ newton @6:40
i might be conflating the two...:P↳ zachary @6:39
I keep trying to get Suno to spit out nonsense (like you heard in the New Year's With Ken show)↳ Barney Grubbs @6:39
Ha! Life's timing is hilarious. Glad you made it through.I have a small, inexpensive USB handheld microscope with a little mount. Helps with my poor eye sight.
↳ kirk from berkeley @6:38
oh wow! Super cool. His designs are great and what he does with a laser cutter is impressive. 6:41pm↳ zachary @6:39
It was newsprint, kind of like Maximum Rock’n'Roll↳ zachary @6:41
Breadboards at least avoid soldering issues!↳ tom tom the pipers son @6:38
She is a big part of it, but it is about him ... avoiding spoilers here .. 🤖↳ Webhamster Henry @6:39
super cool! i will take a peek later!↳ cosmic matrix @6:38
How cool. Now he has Czech Republic sync knowledge. Filters. Oscillators. Logic circuits. Ha!Where's he building? Does he have any instruments online?
↳ cosmic matrix @6:42
Huh. I'll look for archives online. Thanks for sharing. That's a great rabbit hole.
↳ Webhamster Henry @6:42
Hear, hear.↳ carlos danger @6:41
maybe paul schrader has the talent to work with a.i. like maybe julia child could have made cuisine out of hot dogs↳ Webhamster Henry @6:44
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! That is a wish I just made, but hadn't opened a new tab. Thanks for looking and linking.
↳ morphe' @6:42
ok...def watching↳ zachary @6:43
He works for Soundtoys. I think he just builds stuff in his home workshop, but not sure. Also not sure what his latest projects are, unfortunately.↳ zachary @6:44
I have about 65% of them physically... 6:46pm↳ tom tom the pipers son @6:44
human judgement of ai output definitely plays a major role, i would say↳ Webhamster Henry @6:44
no way! sweeeeet!↳ Webhamster Henry @6:45
I never knew that about you Henry.↳ cosmic matrix @6:45
Thanks. You should see if he also wants to be on Techtonic's new circuit bending series.Ha!
↳ zachary @6:46
Right next to that bulging folder is a similarly sized collection of Autoharpoholic magazine. 6:47pm↳ kirk from berkeley @6:12
Sorry I missed you at the start of the show, kirk. We were eating dinner.↳ tom tom the pipers son @6:44
Here it is free and no commercials= Internet Archive:↳ zachary @6:47
He’s pretty reclusive, but lemme know if you need to contact him for any good reason.↳ morphe' @6:48
oh thx so much...!↳ Webhamster Henry @6:47
No! That's wild. I love it. I really enjoy seeing publications. That is the most fun section of Ubuweb.↳ newton @6:01
Cool.As a kid I built a few electronics projects also: crystal radio, a simple transistor radio, and even a very simple synthesizer. All from purchased kits.
I demonstrated my synthesizer in music class in middle school.
6:50pm↳ cosmic matrix @6:49
Thanks. I'll see if he's alive on some forum or something.I always enjoyed his work, so if he was making new things, I'd definitely check them out.
Everyone take a picture of some circuitry that you have and make it your profile. There's a million of you on these boards.
↳ zachary @6:51
I’m not sure what he’s up to lately. Last I heard he was doing performances with his light orbs and such. 6:52pm↳ tom tom the pipers son @6:41
looks like this film from 1993 is the film that was shown are FF in 95.Cheers!
↳ zachary @6:52
.. to complement the old 7" box set "Sounds Of The Northeastern Freeform DJ" www.discogs.com...↳ newton @6:53
ah...i learned details about theremin from the podcast 500 songs that went on a long tangent about theremin while being about good vibrations↳ Song: "DIY Techtonic theme song" by "Kirk Pearson"
I love this!↳ Song: "Tempo Block" by "Raymond Scott"
I also love this!↳ Webhamster Henry @6:54
Hell yeah! I didn't know about that 7" collection. It was before my time with WFMU by a few years. But the styles are right up my alley:
Musique Concrète, Spoken Word, Freestyle, Field Recording, Novelty, Noise, Free Improvisation, Radioplay, Experimental, Parody
Now I have to look for an MP3 version.
