'Stay focused on storytelling': I spoke to Avid about its partnership with Google AI and what it means for…

Avid has partnered with Google Cloud in a multi-year strategic partnership designed to integrate generative and agentic AI into the company's creative tools.

If that all sounds a little dry, what it effectively means is that the platforms can now, according to Avid, "analyze and understand media context automatically, allowing production teams to query content using natural language."

Article continues below

What can the professional editing community expect from this partnership that fundamentally changes how they sit down and work on a Monday morning?

Instead of spending hours organising media before creativity can begin, editors can get to work faster, try ideas more freely, and stay focused on storytelling.

Editors will still open Media Composer as they always have. What changes is how quickly they can get to useful material, start making creative decisions and keep in the editorial flow longer without needing to leave the timeline.

With Avid Content Core, search becomes far more powerful and less manual. Media is analysed and understood automatically, allowing editors to find content using natural language rather than relying on clip names or hand‑entered metadata. This turns media from static files into something more dynamic – assets and data that can be explored, queried, and reused much more easily.

Search is only one part of the picture. Our integration with Gemini extends this intelligence further into the edit itself. This will mean editors can generate B‑roll or temp shots, extend shots, or work with one of the most expansive sets of transcription languages – all while benefitting from automated analysis that enriches clips as they work.

The real shift is that intelligence moves closer to the edit. Instead of spending hours organising media before creativity can begin, editors can get to work faster, try ideas more freely, and stay focused on storytelling. We’re aiming to remove the repetitive, time‑consuming work from the process, while keeping all creative decisions exactly where they belong – with the editor.

This launch positions Agentic AI as a significant step beyond simple automation - so how does it work in practice?

The direction is clear: build on a shared intelligence layer, embed assistance where editors actually work, and continue moving toward workflows that are more responsive and connected, without taking creative control away.

Avid Content Core gives us an intelligence layer that sits across our products and workflows. That allows us not only to apply semantic search and analysis, but to surface relevant material to editors based on what they’re working on, what might be useful to explore next, or what’s important in the context of a project. That shared understanding of content is foundational.

With an API‑first approach, Content Core also helps us move beyond point automation toward more orchestrated, assistive workflows over time. It enables integrations and data exchange across tools and ecosystems in ways that would previously have been not only technically difficult, but financially out of reach for most organisations.

Rather than running generative processes in isolation, Gemini capabilities are deeply embedded into the Media Composer experience. Today, that includes being able to generate content directly into bins, understand asset structures, and apply analysis in a way that fits naturally into editorial workflows.

As the partnership evolves, so will the level of context the system understands. That opens the door to far more powerful assistive tasks that work alongside the editor, rather than separate from the edit. We’ve already been proving this approach through our work with partners using the Media Composer Extensions SDK, where intelligent tools are integrated directly into real‑world workflows.

The direction is clear: build on a shared intelligence layer, embed assistance where editors actually work, and continue moving toward workflows that are more responsive and connected, without taking creative control away.

With AI tools now able to reduce weeks of manual discovery to seconds, how do you see the role of the Editor evolving?

What we consistently hear from editors is that they want more time to think, experiment, and refine their storytelling. That’s exactly what this partnership enables. By reducing the manual burden of logging and searching, our AI tools free editors up to explore more options, try different versions of a scene, and focus on pacing, emotion, and narrative.

There’s also other practical applications. Editors are often forced to drop in temporary shots that don’t really support the flow of a sequence, relying on storyboards, temp audio, or notes to explain intent to the wider team. In the same way editors use temp music to establish tone and momentum, being able to place a more directional temp shot into the cut helps keep the story moving while final assets are still in progress.

With generative and assistive tools embedded directly into the edit, those placeholder moments can better reflect the intended structure and feel of the sequence, and they can live in proper context alongside the surrounding shots. That makes collaboration clearer and reduces the gap between creative intent and delivery.

The role itself doesn’t change. Editors stay in control of the story, while technology helps them get there faster and with more creative flexibility.

What is the immediate impact for a major broadcaster turning decades of passive archive storage into an active, queryable library through this new integration?

This is about unlocking greater value from media assets. With Avid Content Core, archives stop being passive storage and become active, intelligent libraries that teams can tap into instantly. Google Cloud powers advanced vision indexing within Content Core – including facial recognition, object and people detection, and deeper contextual understanding of footage. That means teams can search their archives in a natural, intuitive way and get results in seconds.

Avid Content Core unifies asset identity, ingest, storage, metadata and orchestration into a single intelligent data layer. This eliminates fragmentation across tools and helps teams maximise ROI from content that would have previously been almost impossible to find. Importantly, Content Core is really about helping media companies modernise without disruption. It integrates within customers’ existing systems, avoiding any need for disruptive rip-and-replace overhauls, or costly migrations.

For broadcasters, news organisations, and production houses that are under pressure to do more with less, the impact is game-changing. Faster turnaround, easier content reuse, and the ability to scale production without slowing down.

Professional editors build their reputation on having a distinct style or creative approach. How does Avid ensure that these tools remain collaborative assistants that don't inadvertently homogenize the creative process?

These tools are there for creative enablement, not creative decision-making.

Our approach is very deliberate – these tools are there for creative enablement, not creative decision-making. They take care of repetitive tasks like logging, tagging, and media discovery, while creative choices stay entirely with the editor.

We design our AI tools to fit into existing workflows that creatives already trust, so editors’ use of them is entirely optional and they can employ them in the way that works best for them. It’s about enhancing their work and how they do it, not forcibly changing their creative process.

That same philosophy extends across our rapidly growing partner ecosystem. Tools like Flawless for visual dubbing and dialogue editing, Quickture for assistive editorial, turning hours of raw footage into structured narratives, and Acclaim Audio for automated audio levelling and cleanup all bring powerful AI capabilities into our ecosystem – while still leaving creative control in the editor’s hands, always being able to step into a process at any stage.

What is the specific workflow being demonstrated at NAB 2026 that will show this launch is a fundamental shift in professional production?

At NAB Show, we’re showing attendees what this all looks like inside Media Composer. With Gemini embedded as an Extension, editors can interact with AI directly in their project.

We’re showcasing previews of how they can generate B-roll, transcribe in multiple languages and automatically tag and enrich metadata, and instantly access that intelligence without leaving the edit, streamlining tasks that would normally take multiple steps.

Combined with Avid Content Core, this creates a connected workflow where content is accessible across projects and archives in real time. It’s a huge shift toward a more unified, AI-assisted environment that helps teams move faster, collaborate globally, and deliver their best work.
