Now, despite only two World Cup appearances, he stands on the brink of potentially becoming the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with five more goals this summer. Yet he also finds himself in the strange position of needing success partly to quiet criticism from Real Madrid’s vast supporter base.
Adding to the intrigue are Lamine Yamal and Erling Haaland, two of club football’s most devastating talents, both poised to make a defining impact on the global stage. Even with a recent hamstring setback, the sheer presence of the 18-year-old Yamal in Spain’s squad reinforces their status among the favourites heading into the tournament.
