Lightweight augmented reality glasses maker Xreal Inc. officially unveiled its Aura smart glasses today, powered by Android XR and built with Qualcomm Inc.’s Snapdragon.
Formerly known as Project Aura, these new smart glasses will launch this Fall, combining lightweight, see-through wired extended reality capability and deep integration with Google LLC’s Gemini artificial intelligence.
“The new era of portable spatial computing glasses starts now, as Xreal Aura combines rich and cinematic visuals, powerful platforms and advanced on-device AI capabilities required to realize immersive next-generation XR,” said co-founder and Chief Executive Chi Xu.
Aura runs on Google’s Android XR operating system, software designed for wearable devices that uses AI to fetch information and display it within users’ field of view as part of a visual overlay. This can include weather updates, turn-by-turn navigation instructions, map information and other visuals.
In addition to mapping services, Android XR can also run numerous other mobile apps from the Google Play Store. This allows developers to build apps that can use visuals displayed inside glasses that float as windows, display on surfaces or appear within the world.
“Android XR is made for everyday life, and Xreal Aura brings XR experiences to life through the most innovative wired XR glasses yet,” said Shahram Izadi, vice president and general manager of Android XR at Google.
Aura is designed to provide powerful visuals for wearers, delivering a massive 70-degree field of view with a virtually borderless visual canvas – this stretches well beyond the 52-degree FOV of the previous generation. They are comfortable and light at less than 95 grams. They incorporate world-facing sensors for hand-tracking with six degrees of freedom to provide multimodal AI experiences and a spatial compute unit using the newly announced Snapdragon Reality Elite chip from Qualcomm for advanced extended reality performance.
The new smart glasses launch with several entertainment, gaming and productivity experiences designed for augmented and extended reality. These include “Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars,” “Fallout: Factions,” the film “Asteroid,” co-op dungeon crawler Demeo, computer-aided design productivity space ShapesXR and physical instrument and music piano learning platform Simply Piano XR.
Xreal plans to launch the first wave of Xreal Aura in the fall throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and South Korea, with additional European markets coming soon after. For a limited two-week launch offer, users can reserve headsets for $99 and receive an equivalent launch credit on the final price and priority shipping access when the product becomes available.
