More than 25 years ago, on Jan. 3, 2001, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson took the stage to unveil the first Xbox. Ten months later, the console went on sale, and Microsoft has been a major player in the gaming industry ever since. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the brand appears to be returning to its roots -- but at what cost?
Microsoft unveiled the Xbox Series X25, a special 25th anniversary collection, during its Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. The special edition console and controller include a translucent "OG" green finish and design inspired by the original Xbox and include little Easter eggs inside.
The Xbox Series X console comes with 1TB of storage. Plus, the Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition comes in translucent green, and includes the original face-button colors, along with black-and-white bumpers and the original Xbox logo on the back.
Microsoft didn't provide pricing or a specific release date for the special-edition hardware, saying only it'll arrive in November. More details are expected soon, but the company did say the limited hardware would only be available in certain markets.
The big question on these limited edition items is going to be pricing. Microsoft already increased the price of the Xbox Series console multiple times in the past year, initially due to tariffs but also because of the surge in memory and storage pricing. The 1TB Xbox Series X already costs $100 more now than it did when it launched back in 2020. Microsoft may attempt to subsidize the cost of the console as part of anniversary celebration and sell it for less than the standard model, especially if production is limited. But the company could also go the other way and charge a premium, positioning it as a collector's item.
