Motorola Razr Fold Debuts to Take On Samsung's and Google's Book-Style Phones
Abrar Al-Heeti · 2026-01-07 · via CNET

The Razr Fold has a bigger cover and main display than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Here's everything we know about Motorola's upcoming phone -- and what questions linger.

Motorola is throwing its hat in the foldable phone ring. On Tuesday at CES, the phone-maker unveiled the Motorola Razr Fold, a book-style foldable that's slated to take on competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold

Motorola's foldable will become available in North America this summer. The details, so far, are sparse. In a briefing, the company noted the phone will have a 6.6-inch external display "that feels just like your everyday smartphone." Inside will be an 8.1-inch display, just slightly topping the 8-inch main displays on Samsung's and Google's foldable phones.

Motorola didn't share how thin the Razr Fold will be, but noted that, "Closed, it's sleek and slim and shockingly comfortable to hold." We'll have to see how it compares to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is just 4.2mm thick when open and 8.9mm thick when closed. And then there are other slim phones available outside the US, such as the Honor Magic V5 and the Oppo Find N5.

The back of the Razr Fold packs a triple 50-megapixel camera system, along with Dolby Vision recording and video stabilization.

Unsurprisingly, Motorola also highlighted the Razr Fold's AI capabilities. The phone will come with features you'll also find on the clamshell-style 2025 Razr and Razr Ultra like Catch Me Up for summarizing notifications and Next Move, which recommends actions based on what's on your screen.

The Razr Fold will come in two colors and finishes. There's Pantone blackened blue, with a woven vegan leather finish that Motorola describes as smooth and matte. Or there's Pantone lily white, a vegan leather that's supposedly more silk-textured and "smooth to the touch."

How the Motorola Razr Fold can stand out

It's not clear just how slim Motorola's Razr Fold will be, but it'll likely follow the trend of thin foldable phones that's slated to pick up steam in 2026 -- especially with a rumored foldable iPhone on the horizon. That doesn't mean the Razr has to be eye-catchingly sleek to stand out; Google's Pixel 10 Pro Fold didn't slim down but does pack an impressive IP68 rating for dust- and water-resistance -- a landmark feature for a foldable phone

Motorola says its foldable is ideal for multitasking. Hopefully, in this regard, it'll borrow more from the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which can run up to three apps on the main display at the same time, as opposed to just two on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. That can make it an appealing option for someone who wants to use the Razr Fold as a phone-tablet hybrid device, or even a mini computer of sorts. The phone will work with the Moto Pen Ultra stylus, which Motorola announced alongside the Razr Fold.

The Razr's large internal display -- and even its generous cover display, which is bigger than the Z Fold 7's and Pixel 10 Pro Fold's -- will set it well apart from the clamshell-style Razr and Razr Ultra. The design of those flip phones leans heavily into nostalgia, and their square-shaped cover screens are great for firing off a quick text, glancing at notifications and quickly navigating music controls. But the Razr Fold introduces an entirely new use case to the Motorola lineup, allowing people to watch videos in a larger format, read and annotate text more seamlessly and have multiple apps running at once. Hopefully, the battery will be robust enough to keep up with a full day of heavy use, as well as powering those large displays.

Camera quality will also determine whether the Razr Fold stands out. Both the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold pack solid cameras, demonstrating just how far foldable phones have come in recent years. Hopefully, the Razr Fold will also snap photos that are comparable to those taken on a non-folding, high-end phone.

The biggest question also remains a mystery: How much will the Razr Fold cost? With competitors like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold starting at $1,799 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 starting at $2,000, Motorola's book-style foldable likely won't be cheap. Even its clamshell-style 2025 Razr Ultra starts at a hefty $1,300. Motorola hasn't shared information about the Razr Fold's processor, which will further determine which end of the price spectrum the phone lands on.

Thankfully, it looks like you've got some time to save up before the Razr Fold launches later this year. Until then, we'll have to wait and see what exactly Motorola's next generation has in store.
