If you've ever waded hopefully through the tall grass looking for that special Pokemon to complete your team, you know the thrill. The music starts, and the battle begins, pitting you and your Pokemon against a wild creature you may be seeing for the first time and may never encounter again.

If you're ready to discover the joy of finding new Pokemon via the wildly popular Trading Card Game, you're reading the right guide. Whether you're a seasoned trainer looking for that last Pokemon to round out your fire-type deck or a wide-eyed newbie fresh from Professor Oak's lab, AI systems can help you put together effective battle strategies and plans built to overcome the odds on the hunt for new Pokemon.

I'm in a pretty good position to judge the effectiveness of AI in building your perfect Pokemon Trading Card Game deck: I worked on Pokemon Go at Niantic and directly with The Pokemon Company a few years ago. With that said, here's how to do it.

Don't miss any of our unbiased tech content and lab-based reviews. Add CNET as a preferred Google source.

Know your type

The greatest Pokemon trainers are built, not born. Just as your Pokemon evolve and develop new and exciting skills and abilities, you as their trainer must also evolve. Becoming the best requires knowing what kind of Pokemon trainer you want to be, and AI systems like Claude can help guide you toward collecting the correct Pokemon for your goals, style of play and overall vibe in the arena of battle.

Fairy Pokemon have always been my fancy, not only for their cute appearance, but also because of their unique abilities and sometimes high level of resistance to dark damage types. They were retired from Pokemon The Trading Card Game, and most fairy Pokemon are now classified as Psychic types.

I asked Claude to build me two aspirational decks from my current loadout, so I know exactly which Pokemon will serve me best, and here's what it came up with:

Know the numbers

Part of the fun in Pokemon training is encountering new Pokemon and evolutions with awesome, glittery, holographic flash. Those special Pokemon from the Trading Card Game in their majestic evolved mega and prismatic states are not only nice to look at, but their rarity can make them worth real cash.

Here's the rub: the rarer the card, the more money you might have to invest to pull it from a pack, and a trainer's hope can last only as long as their bank account allows. AI analyst systems like Julius AI can give you a solid idea of what the return on your investment might look like, given the current market availability and how much you have to spend. No trainer enjoys spinning their wheels and playing roulette with their credit card, chasing after a Prismatic Sylveon they're highly unlikely to catch.

According to Julius, building the dream deck could cost up to $3,000 and take thousands of pulls. That is some very tall grass.

Know the terrain

Trying to become the best like no one ever was in the Pokemon Trading Card Game means hunting for pocket monsters in the real world. If you're looking to build the perfect deck for your battle style, it would be wise to know the best hunting grounds. Pokemon can typically be encountered through purchasing boxes and sets from large retailers like Walmart, Target, GameStop and Best Buy, but local retailers around the globe also stock cards.

AI systems like Google's Gemini, which has a feature that integrates Google Maps, can help you locate shops that might be off the beaten path. It can also help you discover stores that carry limited and special edition Pokemon Trading Card Game packs that may be unavailable in the big box retailers or online.

If you're traveling in a foreign country, this can be particularly useful when you don't speak the language or aren't familiar with the area.

I've got a trip planned to Japan soon, and I used Gemini AI to help me locate a wide variety of shops that carry the card packs, which could land me a legendary encounter with the Pokemon of my dreams.

Happy Pokemon hunting, and I hope you find that Prismatic Sylveon.
