Tuesday's State of Play was full of new announcements from Sony, including our first look at Wolverine gameplay and the big surprise of God of War: Laufey. It also showed that Sony is changing its approach to the PlayStation platform's future and that everyone in the industry is terrified of the release of GTA 6.
There were more than 20 games featured in the State of Play event, with reveals of brand-new games and new details for already known titles. A noticeable change from previous years was the lack of updates on live-service games. Instead, Sony focused on traditional narrative-based games, both big-budget and indie.
Last month, Sony's earnings report revealed that its investment in Bungie was not panning out, having lost more than $500 million on its acquisition of the developer. Bungie's Marathon had a spot in Tuesday's show to feature its upcoming second season, but it was one of the few live-service games featured.
Another very noticeable theme was the clear avoidance of what could well be the biggest game of the decade, GTA 6. The latest entry in the franchise from Rockstar Games is set to be released on Nov. 19. Games shown with 2026 release dates were all clustered together in September and October. The rest are waiting until at least next year.
