Spanish No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz, meanwhile, had to overcome severe cramp as well as Germany's Alexander Zverev to book his place in Sunday's main event in another thrilling last-four clash, which went all the way.
The women's finalists both had somewhat more straightforward paths to their showdown on Saturday. The No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka eased past Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-3, while No. 5 seed Elena Rybakina also enjoyed a straight-sets win over America's Jessica Pegula to reach her second Aussie Open final.
