This $130 Seagate portable hard drive deal includes a crucial data protection perk most brands charge extra for

If your computer’s storage is filling up, or you just need a reliable place to back up photos, videos, documents, and game saves the Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable Hard Drive is now $129.99 (was $149.99) at Best Buy.

It’s about as close to plug-and-play as external storage gets, and at this capacity it’s one of the most straightforward upgrades you can make to a desktop, laptop, or gaming console. But what I really appreciate here is the three-year inclusion of the Rescue Data Recovery Services plan, which is a great back-up extra protecting you if the drive ever fails.

This is Seagate’s long-running Expansion line, and the 2TB model has long been a popular choice. The appeal is simple: there’s no software to install, no formatting required for most setups, and no learning curve. Plug it into a USB port and it shows up as a drive, ready to drag and drop files onto immediately.

Today's top hard drive deal

At 2TB, this drive sits in the sweet spot for most people’s storage needs — enough for tens of thousands of photos, hundreds of hours of video, full game installs, or a complete backup of a typical laptop’s drive with plenty of room to spare. For anyone running out of space on a laptop with a 256GB or 512GB internal SSD, offloading large media libraries to a drive like this is one of the cheapest ways to reclaim that space without touching the internals of your machine.

Real-world performance lands around 130MB/s according to user testing, which is typical for a 5400rpm 2.5” mechanical drive over USB 3.0. That’s comfortably fast enough for backups, media storage, and even editing video directly off the drive for less demanding projects — though if you’re doing serious 4K editing work, an SSD will feel noticeably snappier. For the price difference, though, this drive offers vastly more capacity per pound spent.

The physical design is genuinely pocketable: at 115.3 × 80 × 12.6mm and well under half a pound, it’s smaller and lighter than a typical smartphone. It draws power directly over USB, so there’s no separate power brick to carry — just the drive and a short USB cable, both of which fit easily into a laptop bag pocket.

One feature that sets this apart from generic budget drives is the included Rescue Data Recovery Services plan. If the drive ever fails, Seagate’s recovery service will attempt to retrieve your data — a service that would otherwise cost a meaningful amount if purchased separately or used through a third-party recovery specialist. It’s not a substitute for keeping a proper backup strategy, but it’s a genuinely useful safety net included at no extra cost.

For gamers, it's worth highlighting that this drive works with PS4, PS5, and Xbox consoles for storing games and media. So, it's a budget-friendly way to expand games storage without buying a premium console-specific “Game Drive”. Mac users will need to reformat the drive from its default Windows-friendly format before use, which takes a couple of minutes in Disk Utility.

If you need a no-fuss way to add 2TB of storage to a PC, Mac, or console, the Seagate Expansion delivers exactly that — reliably, compactly, and with a recovery safety net built in. You can also check out more options in our guide to the best external hard drives.
