SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD

The SanDisk Extreme has long been one of our favorite external drives, offering everything most people will need from a reliable and durable portable SSD, and right now the high-capacity SanDisk Extreme 4TB is down to $450 (was $805) at Best Buy.

But it's not the only SSD discounted. Best Buy is having a sale on the full range of models, with capacities ranging from 1TB all the way up to 8TB. I've focused on the 4TB models below, but you'll find links to all the other capacities as well.

The standard SanDisk Extreme Portable External USB-C NVMe SSD is available in Black, Monterey, and Sky Blue finishes, with capacities ranging from 1TB up to 8TB (depending on color).

The drive supports read speeds of up to 1050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1000MB/s over a USB-C interface using USB 3.1 Gen2.

It includes 256-bit AES hardware encryption and draws power directly from the USB port, removing the need for external adapters. The enclosure measures 3.97 inches tall and weighs about 2.4 ounces.

In our rave review, we called it "hands-down one of the best external SSDs (rugged or not) on the market."

The Extreme Pro Portable SSD pushes performance further, delivering read and write speeds of up to 2000MB/s through USB-C connectivity.

Available in capacities of 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB, the Pro model includes password protection alongside AES 256-bit encryption for securing stored files.

The housing is slightly slimmer than the standard version at 0.4 inches thick, while total weight sits around 2.73 ounces.

In our review we said, "built for toughness, the Extreme Pro Portable SSD delivers great performance no matter what you’re throwing at it."

Another variant, the Extreme Portable SSD External USB Type-C model, also supports speeds of up to 2000MB/s and connects using USB 3.2 Gen2.

This version includes IP65-rated water and dust resistance, giving it added protection in environments where exposure to moisture or debris could be a concern. With a weight of about 1.6 ounces and compact dimensions measuring roughly 3.35 inches by 2 inches, it's one of the lighter portable storage options in the lineup.

Finally, SanDisk also offers the new Extreme PRO with USB4, aimed squarely at users who need faster transfer speeds for large files and demanding workloads.

Available in 2TB and 4TB capacities, this model supports USB4 connectivity with bandwidth up to 40Gbps and delivers read speeds of up to 3800MB/s and write speeds reaching 3700MB/s, making it the fastest portable option in the lineup.

In our review we noted, "compared to a USB 3.2 SSD, the SanDisk Extreme PRO with USB4 is a beast, at more than double the best speed of even a Gen 2x2 drive in reading and writing."

All SanDisk drives include five-year warranties, making them great, long-term portable storage solutions for everyday computing, backups, and large file transfers.
