Small businesses often juggle numerous tasks, from managing sales leads and marketing campaigns to providing exceptional customer support. The key to navigating this complexity and fostering sustainable growth lies in effective customer relationship management (CRM). While many CRM solutions exist, one stands out as a particularly robust and adaptable choice for smaller enterprises: Vtiger.

This article will explore how Vtiger, with its comprehensive suite of features and flexible deployment options, can be an invaluable tool, empowering small businesses to streamline operations, enhance customer interactions, and ultimately, achieve their growth ambitions.

What is Vtiger

Small businesses find Vtiger an extremely valuable Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool because it matches their fast-paced business requirements. The full range of Vtiger features enables small businesses to automate operations and unite customer information, leading to better client relationships.

Article continues below

Small sales teams can use Vtiger sales automation tools to score leads, manage pipelines, and automate follow-ups, enabling them to focus on essential leads while minimizing administrative work. Vtiger's automation tools allow companies to develop and execute precise advertising campaigns through email and SMS platforms, which remain crucial to customer relationship development despite scarce resources.

The powerful help desk system allows small businesses to offer prompt and organized customer support. The system provides businesses with tools to handle inquiries while tracking issues and building customer loyalty by delivering efficient service. Combining existing tool integration with customizable workflows and real-time analytics enables small businesses to monitor growth while adapting without needing advanced IT skills or significant financial investment.

Installing Vtiger on your server begins with establishing a suitable web server environment. The setup requires users to configure a LAMP stack consisting of Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP, or a WAMP stack consisting of Windows, Apache, MySQL, and PHP when using a Windows server.

Vtiger's first requirement for server readiness involves verifying that your server meets Vtiger's required PHP and MySQL/MariaDB versions, alongside sufficient memory and storage capacity. Preparing your server environment ends with downloading the Vtiger open-source package from its official source and extracting it into your web server's appropriate directory.

The process requires you to create a MySQL database and user account specifically for Vtiger. The following step involves configuring your web server (Apache or Nginx) to serve the Vtiger application correctly. Virtual hosts must be set up, and the rewrite module must be enabled during this process.

When you access your server through its domain address or IP address in a web browser, you will see the Vtiger installation wizard. The installation wizard will direct you through the rest of the setup process to establish database connections and set admin credentials before choosing which modules to activate for your online Vtiger CRM deployment.

Self-hosted Vtiger deployments follow identical core requirements despite minor variations in server operating system and web server selection for configuration commands.

I installed Vtiger on my Hostinger web hosting account because it was the easiest way. However, you can also install Vtiger manually by following the steps above.

What is Hostinger?

Hostinger is a popular web hosting provider offering various services to help individuals and businesses access their websites online. They provide the space and technology on their servers where websites "live" so people worldwide can access them.

Beyond hosting, Hostinger also offers related tools and services to make building and managing a website easier. These include website builders, domain name registration, email hosting, and customer support.

Installing Vtiger on Hostinger

The company’s auto-install feature is the easiest way to install Vtiger on your Hostinger-hosted server. As its name suggests, this tool makes setting up a third-party software installation, such as Vtiger, relatively pain-free.

At the time of this writing, these are the steps to follow:

  • First, log in to your Hostinger account.
  • On the menu to the left, choose Websites > Website List, then choose Dashboard next to the name of your website.
  • On the left menu, choose PHP Configuration, then select the PHP Options tab.
  • Remove “shell_exec” from the disableFunctions page, then scroll down and select Save.
  • Next, choose the Website option on the left menu, then Auto Install.
  • Under the "Other" section, click Select.
  • From the dropdown menu, choose Vtiger.
  • Click Select.

A pop-up window will appear to configure your Vtiger installation. To keep it separate from your main site, it’s recommended that you install Vtiger in a subdirectory of your website (e.g., `yourdomain.com/Vtiger`).

During these next steps, you must assign a Website Title, Administrator Email, Administrator Username, and Administrator Password at the top of the pop-up window.

Next, click Advanced, then:

In the Enter Subdirectory box, type the name you want for your subdirectory (e.g., `Vtiger`, `tiger`, `Vtigerinstall`).

Ensure "Create new database" is selected, then assign a strong password for this new database.

Final steps

Now that Vtiger is installed on your server, it’s time to set it up for your business. To get started, visit the location of your website where Vtiger was installed. For example, if you created a subdirectory called “vtiger,” the address would be: http://yourwebsite.com/vtiger.

Next, log in to Vtiger using the credentials you established above. On the main page, you must decide which modules to install. These include Contact Management (the default), Sales Automation, Marketing, Support, Invoice & Inventory Management, and Project Management.

After the initial setup, it's time for post-installation configuration and customization. Start by updating your company details and logo in the Settings, as this information will appear in various system communications. Next, focus on user management by creating accounts for other users and defining their permissions through roles and profiles, which helps secure data and manage collaboration. If you have existing customer or sales data, you'll want to import it into Vtiger using CSV files.
