What's the most affordable shipping solution?

You're shipping orders, watching costs pile up, and wondering if there's a cheaper way to do it. Carrier rates go up nearly every year, so a monthly software subscription on top of postage adds up fast when margins are already tight.

There's no single most affordable shipping solution, because the cheapest option for a solo Etsy seller looks nothing like the best value for a business pushing several thousand orders a month across Amazon, Shopify, and others.

How shipping software works

Most platforms advertise a headline subscription price, but what you actually spend depends on a few moving parts: monthly fees, per-label charges, carrier markups, and add-ons for things like automation or API access.

Free plans can look tempting, but they often come with restricted features. A tool with no monthly fee but poor carrier discounts could cost you more per label than a paid plan with better rates. Ask yourself what the total monthly bill looks like — subscription plus postage combined — at your current volume. That's the number worth comparing.

If you want completely free shipping software

Pirate Ship

Pirate Ship has no monthly fees. You pay only for postage at discounted USPS and UPS rates, keeping a card on file or pre-loading your balance to cover labels. On pricing alone, it's hard to beat.

Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed!

Carrier options are limited to USPS and UPS, which rules out FedEx, DHL, and international couriers. There's no API either, so storefronts that aren't natively supported can't be connected. For domestic sellers shipping small volumes, none of that may matter.

Veeqo

Veeqo is free to use. Owned by Amazon, the platform earns a small commission from shipping volume passed to carriers rather than charging a subscription. Sellers get access to pre-negotiated rates from UPS, USPS, FedEx, and DHL, plus up to 5% back with Veeqo Credits.

One thing worth knowing: Veeqo is an Amazon product, and some sellers aren't comfortable sharing their business data with Amazon. If Amazon is already a core sales channel for you and that arrangement sits fine, Veeqo is one of the stronger free options out there.

If you're willing to spend a little each month

ShipStation

ShipStation's free plan covers up to 10 shipments per month, with paid plans starting from around $14.99 per month. Its integrations span Amazon, Shopify, eBay, Etsy, and more than 100 other ecommerce platforms, which makes it a practical choice when orders come from several channels at once.

Your bill can grow quickly as volume or feature needs increase. API access sits behind a higher tier, starting at $29.99 per month for up to 50 shipments. For sellers on one or two platforms who don't need API access, those pricing jumps are hard to justify. ShipStation makes more sense once a multi-channel operation starts to scale.

Shippo

Shippo's free Starter plan covers up to 30 labels per month. Paid Pro plans start at $19 per month for up to 200 labels, then step up to $29 per month for 201 to 500 as your volume grows. API access is included on every tier, even the free one, so you don't pay extra to connect your own tools or build automated workflows.

You also get access to over 40 carriers, including USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and regional options. That's more flexibility than Pirate Ship offers, and the pricing tiers are clear enough that you can forecast costs before you hit the next level.

If you ship internationally

Easyship

Easyship connects with over 250 couriers worldwide, calculates duties and taxes at checkout, and shows customers real shipping costs upfront rather than estimates. A free plan is available, and paid tiers unlock more automation and branded tracking.

For sellers who ship mostly within the US, there are better-value options. Easyship is built for businesses where cross-border volume is significant, and it handles customs paperwork and global carrier comparison without requiring a separate tool for each.

How to pick the right one

Start with two numbers: how many shipments you send per month, and how many cross a border.

Shipping fewer than 30 orders domestically? Pirate Ship or Shippo's free tier covers it without a subscription. Primarily selling on Amazon and comfortable with that ecosystem? Veeqo gives you multi-carrier pre-negotiated rates at no cost.

Once you pass a few hundred orders a month, the calculation changes. A paid Shippo plan often saves more through carrier discounts than the subscription costs, and automation cuts enough time from the process to justify the fee. For heavy international volume, Easyship is worth the setup to get duties and tax calculations right at checkout.

The bottom line

The most affordable shipping software is the one that costs the least for your specific volume and carrier mix, not necessarily the one with the lowest plan price. A free platform with weak carrier discounts can end up costing more month-to-month than a $19 plan with better rates.

Pick two or three platforms that fit your scenario, run your actual order volume through each rate calculator, and compare the total. Once subscription and postage sit side by side as one number, the right choice usually becomes obvious.
