The rapid progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has permeated commercial operations and daily life in recent years, creating the illusion that it’s already fully intelligent.

With its high visibility and the growing rate of adoption of AI tools, many predict hyperintelligent systems are just around the corner.

Impressive, yes – but far from human intelligence.

What Is AGI, Really?

This matters because the conversation in the AI sector is increasingly framed around Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a term that appears frequently and is often treated as an inevitable next step.

Human intelligence is not simply the ability to produce a plausible answer, or even a useful one. It depends on judgement, particularly in situations where context and ambiguity matter.

These are precisely the areas where today’s systems falter. Recent failures, like AI chatbots validating users’ delusional or unhealthy thoughts, make this clear: fluency should not be mistaken for understanding.

The reason we remain far from AGI is not that progress has stalled. Scaling laws have delivered real gains with bigger models and datasets. But scaling can’t fix everything.

We’re hitting diminishing returns, and there is little reason to assume that more data alone will instill the elements of intelligence that are still missing.

The Limits of Data

The problem is becoming even more pronounced as the composition of training data changes. Public data is finite, high-quality data even more so, and the industry now faces the challenge of distinguishing human content from AI-generated content, which has little value for training new models.

A system repeatedly trained on copies of copies of human output will get better at mimicking tone, style and structure, but it won’t truly understand context, values, or meaning. Unless we pin our hopes on AGI emerging spontaneously from scale alone – a very unreliable strategy – the conclusion is simple: for models to develop human-like intelligence, humans must teach them.

A Human Solution to an Artificial Problem

That is where human intelligence becomes central to the discussion. It is not only a question of knowledge, but of intangibles – nonlinear reasoning, experience-shaped interpretations, and contextual judgments – that conventional datasets miss.

If AGI means building systems that can operate with the flexibility and depth of human thought, then the missing input is not simply more content, but a rich representation of how people actually think.

We need a model where humans are not treated merely as the source of training data, but as active participants in the development of AGI.

In practice, this means capturing reasoning processes as well as answers, recording how people arrived at those answers, and gathering information with the value judgements and contextual interpretations that shape how that information is used.

This kind of training data is harder to obtain than scraped text, but it is far more valuable if the objective is to build systems that move beyond the appearance of intelligence.

The Intelligence Revolution

One of the defining features of the current AI model is that human knowledge, creativity, and behavioral data are routinely absorbed into the development of AI systems without any meaningful compensation.

If the next stage of AI depends more directly on human input, then the case for treating people as contributors rather than as a passive resource becomes stronger, both ethically and commercially.

There is no reason for a future shaped by AI to be discussed only in terms of job displacement; part of that future will involve new forms of work centered on training, refining, and evaluating AI, and platforms like Humanix point towards how that model might begin to take shape.

Two Roads Diverged

The path to AGI will depend on a more honest understanding of what today’s systems can and cannot do. As I see it, we stand at a fork in the road.

One path continues embedding unintelligent AI deeper into the economy, hoping that scale, synthetic data, and brute-force optimization will eventually yield higher intelligence.

The result may be faster, more polished and more commercially pervasive systems, but also inevitable devaluation as performance plateaus and models grow increasingly dependent on degraded, circular training data.

The other path recognizes that the next stage of AI development depends on a deliberate integration of human intelligence itself, because the qualities we associate with general intelligence do not appear automatically when a model grows large enough.

If we are serious about AGI, that is the work in front of us: not just building more capable systems but building systems that can meaningfully incorporate the aspects of human intelligence that current models still lack. Data has taken us a very long way, but people are the key to unlocking what comes next.
