Europe’s $17bn tech quarter: AI, deep tech win as fintech slides

European start-ups raised a two-year high of $17bn in Q1 2026, with AI, enterprise applications and deep tech the big winners.

The headline number looks healthy. European tech funding climbed 24pc year-on-year to $17bn across 764 rounds in the first quarter of 2026, its strongest quarter in two years. That’s according to the Tracxn Europe Tech Funding Report, Q1 2026.

However, when we dig into where the money went, a reprioritisation appears to be underway – away from fintech and toward the infrastructure powering the next generation of AI and robotics. AI infrastructure was the single largest funding category, pulling in $4.8bn. Three deals alone – Nscale’s $2bn Series C, Neura Robotics’ $1.2bn Series C and Wayve’s $1.2bn Series D – accounted for more than $4.4bn of a late-stage surge that rose 73pc compared to Q1 2025.

Enterprise applications attracted $12.7bn in total, a massive 101pc increase over both Q4 2025 and the same period last year, as investors pivoted toward compute-intensive, long-duration bets like high-performance computing.

Irish company Aerska gets a mention on Tracxn’s ‘Soonicorn’ list of start-ups likely to reach the coveted ‘unicorn’ status soon after it raised another $39m in February, bringing total investment to $60m.

Fintech, by contrast, slipped 14pc year-on-year to $1.7bn. The sector wasn’t abandoned – Allica Bank became the quarter’s sole new unicorn and Mastercard snapped up BVNK for $1.8bn – but no single fintech deal came close to matching the scale of the AI and robotics rounds.

The broader picture is one of concentration as investors make bigger bets. Deal count year-on-year actually fell 19pc to 764 rounds, meaning average deal sizes expanded sharply. Seed funding nearly doubled to $2.2bn, while early-stage contracted 27pc. Investors appear to be backing early discovery bets and late-stage conviction plays, with less appetite for the middle.

Geographically, London dominated the first quarter, capturing 39pc of all European tech funding at $6.7bn, up from 19pc in Q4 2025. Paris held second place at $2bn, anchored by AMI Labs’ $1bn seed round.

With only four IPOs recorded and acquisitions down 37pc, the exit environment remained constrained.
