Anthropic is reportedly in talks to raise funding that would value it as close to a trillion dollars.
Anthropic is in discussions with investors to raise between $30bn and $50bn in new funding at a valuation of up to $950bn, a deal that would see the Claude maker surpass rival OpenAI as the world’s most valuable artificial intelligence startup.
The New York Times, citing people involved in the discussions, reported on Monday (12 April) that the talks could value Anthropic at 2.5 times its valuation of $380bn just three months ago. The potential valuation would exceed OpenAI’s most recent figure of $852bn, achieved in a funding round completed in March.
Bloomberg, which first reported in late April that Anthropic was weighing a round at a valuation of more than $900bn, reported yesterday that the company has since held discussions with existing backers about participating in a new raise of $30bn.
Anthropic has already secured two major financing commitments from Google who pledged $10bn in April, with plans to invest up to $30bn more, and Amazon which is investing $5bn with potential for a further $20bn.
The discussions come at a moment of serious momentum for Anthropic. CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei recently told the Code with Claude developer conference that the company had reached a $30bn annual revenue run rate and could grow 80 times as large this year.
Founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has grown into one of the most closely watched companies in the sector, with products including Claude Cowork and Claude Code. Bloomberg has also reported that Anthropic is considering an initial public offering as soon as October.
The fundraising push reflects an ongoing frenzy of AI investment. Anthropic has declined to make any comment to the press on the reported fundraising talks, and it is understood that they are still at an early stage.
