After Amazon, Google commits up to $40bn in Anthropic

In a similar deal, Amazon said that it plans to invest up to $25bn into Anthropic.

Google is investing $10bn in Anthropic, with another $30bn to potentially follow if the AI start-up meets set performance milestones.

The Alphabet-owned company is investing in Anthropic at the $350bn valuation it hit in January. The AI start-up raised $30bn in a round led by GIC a month later, at a market price of $380bn.

Investors have valued Anthropic at $800bn or more as the company reportedly prepares for an initial public offering around October this year.

Google has already invested billions into Anthropic since 2022, despite engaging in heavy competition with Claude, with its own Gemini series of AI models and tools. Google said the latest support will help Anthropic expand its computing capacity.

Anthropic is commanding a growing number of enterprise customers, overtaking OpenAI in terms of up take from first time users.

The growth comes amid a series of successful launches from Anthropic, including Claude Code, Cowork, and the somewhat controversial Mythos, touted as being unparallelled in vulnerability detection and exploitation.

The latest investment from Google is an expansion of a partnership the two companies announced with Broadcom earlier this month.

As part of the deal, Anthropic has agreed to tap 3.5GW of Google’s tensor processing unit (TPU) capacity from Broadcom. The multi-gigawatt capacity is expected to come online in 2027. Google’s TPUs are the best possible alternative to Nvidia’s chips for AI use cases.

Last year, Google said it will provide Anthropic with 1m TPUs in a deal worth “tens of billions” of dollars. The deal is expected to bring “well over” 1 GW of capacity online in 2026.

Meanwhile, the two also have a deal which will see Google Cloud providing 5 GW of computing capacity to Anthropic over the next five years.

In a similar announcement made just days earlier, Amazon said that it plans to invest up to $25bn into Anthropic – $5bn up front and as much as $20bn in the future.

The e-commerce giant has already invested $8bn in Anthropic, while the AI start-up has also committed to spending more than $100bn over the next decade on Amazon’s cloud technologies.

Earlier this month, reports suggested that Anthropic was exploring the possibility of building its own chips, worried that supply might not keep pace with the development of new AI systems. Rivals Meta and OpenAI already have such projects underway.

Google, meanwhile, made a series of new enterprise-focused launches, including the latest generation of its TPUs, at its annual Cloud Next conference last week.
