For day 21, we’re back in Berlin, where a young graphic designer with a love for type decided in 2008 to make his passion his full-time job. Today, Hannes von Döhren’s type foundry called HvD Fonts sells a wide range of typefaces, some of them being hugely popular designs. The catalog does not only include high-quality sans-serif and serif typefaces but also a surprisingly large variety of expressive display fonts.
Brandon Grotesque was the typeface that put Hannes on the map for many of us. Awarded with a Certificate of Typographic Excellence by the Type Directors Club in 2011, this geometric sans captures the atmosphere of the 1920s and classics like Futura but combines it with the warmth of slightly rounded corners and a charming, contemporary openness.
FF Mark, released in 2013 and created by Hannes von Döhren, Christoph Koeberlin, and the FontFont Type Department with creative input of Erik Spiekermann, is one of the most iconic contemporary geometric sans-serif designs out there – clean, balanced, and readable.
Fabrikat, designed by Christoph Koeberlin, Hannes von Döhren, and Inga Plönnigs, is a geometric sans reminiscent of DIN. Engineered, straightforward, reduced, functional, and also available in a narrower version and a monospaced design.
Palast, designed by Hannes von Döhren and Bernd Volmer, is a transitional, slightly geometric serif typeface that comes in three optical sizes: Poster, Display, and Text.
And the latest addition to the library is Hannes’s Match, a compact and confident grotesk.
