Happy Monday everyone, and let's talk about gender and ethnicity ratios at tech events. The weekend before last I was speaking at a Tech Fest in my home city of Valencia, and that all went very well thank you very much, really enjoyed the experience.   The ratio in the attendance, roughly and by eyesight only, was 80 men to 20 women at best, 90% white. Except, notably, the talk on women in tech as an untapped resource by the brilliant Mariia Suleiman, which ran a full inversion of that ratio, I'd say even 90 to 10.   A ratio that shifted a little further after I went into the hallway and grabbed a few men-presenting folks by the scruff of the neck, figuratively of course, but with that kind of spirit.   (Mate: WE already know. We need YOU in the room.) This week I am speaking at UX London, so the other day I finally sat down and went through the speakers line-up properly. Strange that I hadn't done it sooner, as equity of representation is one of my criteria for acceptance when a conference invites me, but anyway. Well knock me over with a feather. What a slap in the face of every tech conference that claims it is simply not possible to have a truly representative line-up: multiple perspectives, multiple faces, multiple experiences, rather than the same default one we've all been staring at for decades (that's a white middle aged man in case you're wondering. I do love you, white middle aged man, but we've heard from you, and keep hearing from you. Time to hear from others, too). Yes, my friend. It is possible. UX London has done it.
