Nintendo teases they'd 'like to adhere' to the Super Mario Galaxy Movie's lore in future games — including Princess Peach's backstory

  • The Super Mario Galaxy Movie explored more of Princess Peach's backstory
  • As a result, Nintendo has said that they'd like to "adhere as much as possible" to the movies in upcoming games
  • Unfortunately, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie received many negative reviews from critics

Warning: Contains spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could have a big influence on upcoming games, according to Nintendo's game director Shigeru Miyamoto.

In a recent interview with Nintendo Dream Web, Miyamoto told fans that Princess Peach's backstory may be expanded upon in future games, using The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as a reference point.

Miyamoto said, "Because we don’t know what kind of game we’ll make next with our characters, having too many character settings would become a constraint. I’m fine with being bound by the gameplay, but I don’t want to be bound by having created a story, which has been the reason for not making movies for many years.

"So, before making this movie, I hadn’t decided on the character’s backstory, but now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to expand on the character in various ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games.”

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, we learn that Princess Peach is the sister of galactic traveller Rosalina, and that both of them were born from stardust. At a young age, the two sisters were separated when Peach was sent to live in the Mushroom Kingdom for her own safety.

This was a huge reveal for fans of the game, and it does seem like this will be firmly rooted in the character's canon going forward.

Miyamoto has also responded to bad Super Mario Galaxy Movie reviews

This is good news for those who enjoyed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but there's a chance not everyone will be pleased, as reviews of the movie were quite poor, averaging 43% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The audience score is much different, though, as the movie has 89% on the Popcornmeter. So it has proven to be a very divisive take on the much-loved video game characters.

In the same interview with Nintendo Dream Web, Miyamoto addressed some of the bad reviews for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which has a lower approval rating than its predecessor.

He said: “The situations are similar, aren’t they? Actually, I thought the critics’ reviews of the first film were understandable. But I thought this time it would be different… and it was even harsher than last time, which I found strange.

"People from other mediums are coming in and working hard to liven up the film industry, so it’s really strange that the people who are trying to liven up the film industry are so passive.”

Despite the mixed response, it does seem the movies and games will become closely linked, so what we saw in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could definitely influence future Nintendo games. We'll just have to wait and see what that looks like.

Lucy is a long-time movie and television lover who is an approved critic on Rotten Tomatoes. She has written several reviews in her time, starting with a small self-ran blog called Lucy Goes to Hollywood before moving onto bigger websites such as What's on TV and What to Watch, with TechRadar being her most recent venture. Her interests primarily lie within horror and thriller, loving nothing more than a chilling story that keeps her thinking moments after the credits have rolled. Many of these creepy tales can be found on the streaming services she covers regularly.

When she’s not scaring herself half to death with the various shows and movies she watches, she likes to unwind by playing video games on Easy Mode and has no shame in admitting she’s terrible at them. She also quotes The Simpsons religiously and has a Blinky the Fish tattoo, solidifying her position as a complete nerd.
