A heartfelt and impassioned plea from Russell T Davies, Tip Toe captures what it means to be part of a marginalised community in today's Britain. The five-part suburban drama revolves around gay bar owner Leo (Alan Cumming) and electrician Clive (David Morrissey), long-term neighbours whose arm's-length but cordial relations become soured by the incumbent political climate of division.

"It's like he creeps through the walls," says Clive of Leo, in a bitter effort to explain his growing detachment from the world at large, but most of all his wife Diane (Denise Welch) and sons George (Jackson Connor) and Saul (Joseph Evans). Ironically, it's on the other side of the wall that his insidious newfound worldview has long-ago seeped over the threshold and in through the windows to impose itself on every facet of Leo's life, both public and private.

It's not through soul-searching or conversation with his loved ones that Clive has arrived at this conclusion. Instead, it came to him through his TV screen, his computer, phone, radio, newspaper – simple answers to difficult questions, an obligation to shift responsibility to the person who's a little bit different from you.

Leo, for his part, only has himself to blame. It was he, after all, who raised his head above the parapet, by offering Clive a lifeline when he was struggling to make ends meet, with work at Canal Street's Spit and Polish. As he's advised by Melba (Paul Rhys): "I used to walk into rooms and go, ta-daa! Now I walk on tip toe. In case I get seen."
