The Osimhen effect: How Nigeria’s superstar impacted the way fans follow football
Tim Lesnik · 2026-03-17 · via Opera Mobile

By Tim Lesnik, Product Manager

From the Bodo Glimt fairytale to the free-scoring exploits of Bayern Munich, there are no shortage of storylines ahead of the Champions League last-16 second legs this week.

And while the lure of the Premier League means eyes will naturally be on the struggles of the English clubs in Europe, one storyline holds particular resonance in Nigeria – meaning there will be even greater attention than normal at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

While football fans in Nigeria aren’t naturally drawn to the exploits of teams from Turkey, the appearance of one of their countrymen in Galatasaray’s starting line-up means there’s heightened interest in their match against Liverpool. Osimhen set up the winner as Galatasaray beat Liverpool 1-0 in Istanbul last week. Now he goes to Anfield for the second leg with Galatasaray holding the lead, their fans banned from the ground, and one of the loudest atmospheres in European football waiting for them.

When Victor Osimhen completed his loan move from Napoli to Galatasaray on 4 September 2024 – before making the move permanent the following summer – it immediately caught the attention of football fans across Nigeria.

At Opera Mini, we have a unique window into how fans follow the game. Over 25 million users across Africa rely on Opera Mini not only for fast, data-saving browsing, but also for our built-in football section, where they can follow their favourite teams and subscribe to push notifications for match updates, transfers, and breaking news. Each user follows more than six teams on average — which means we’re sitting on a real-time picture of what happens to fan behaviour when a star player moves clubs.

Looking at user behavior before and after Osimhen’s transfer underlines how Nigerian fans engage with football. If a Nigerian star moves clubs, the fans move with them – in large numbers.

Since Osimhen joined Galatasaray, the number of Opera Mini users following the Turkish club has increased by an astonishing 705%.

While Manchester United and Real Madrid dominate the list of the most-followed teams among African fans, and Galatasaray have a significantly smaller overall base of followers, the surge we’ve seen since Osimhen’s arrival shows just how strongly Nigerian supporters rally behind their stars wherever they play.

Fans are exploring more teams and leagues

Our data also suggests that fans are increasingly broadening their football horizons.

While the biggest global clubs remain hugely popular, the share of followers concentrated among the top 10 most-followed teams has slightly decreased in the period since Osimhen’s move. This indicates that users are discovering and following a wider range of clubs and leagues.

For fans, that means the football experience is becoming more global and more personal. Instead of following only the traditional giants, supporters are tracking the teams where their favourite players are making an impact.

Opera Mini keeps fans connected to the game

This is exactly the kind of experience the Opera Mini football section is built for. With a lightweight design and powerful data-saving technology, Opera Mini helps fans stay connected to the clubs and players they care about without worrying about heavy data usage. Live Scores is completely data-free for Opera Mini users. And because it is built natively into Opera Mini it loads faster than any football site. No spinning wheel, no waiting. Just the score, the second it happens.

Whether it’s following Galatasaray because of Victor Osimhen, keeping track of the Premier League giants, or discovering new teams across Europe, Opera Mini gives users a simple way to stay updated through live scores, news, and personalized notifications.

Nigerian talent is everywhere

Osimhen isn’t the only Nigerian star making waves abroad. The Nigerian football diaspora continues to grow, with players competing across Europe’s top leagues. For example, Fulham now have three Nigerian players in its squad – Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Samuel Chukwueze – to serve as a handy reminder of how widely Nigerian talent is represented at the highest level of the game.

For fans back home, that means more teams to watch, more matches to follow, and more reasons to stay connected. And with Opera Mini, they can follow every step of the journey – wherever Nigerian stars shine next.
