1955 MG TF 1500 5-Speed
Update Credit Card · 2026-07-10 · via The best vintage and classic cars for sale online | Bring a Trailer

This 1955 MG TF 1500 spent time in the Southeast in the 1970s and was located in New England by the 1990s. It was fitted with a Ford T9 five-speed manual gearbox during a refurbishment that was completed prior to the seller’s acquisition of the vehicle in 2022. The 1.5-liter XPEG inline-four has been overbored and fitted with an assortment of aftermarket parts that are detailed in the text below, with highlights including JE aluminum pistons, a Crane camshaft and valvetrain components, and a forged crankshaft and connecting rods. Finished in red over black, the car also features dual SU carburetors, a high-torque starter, and an electric fuel pump as well as black-finished 15″ wire wheels, an MGB sway bar, drum brakes, a black soft top, a Derrington wood-rimmed steering wheel, Crow lap belts, and Lucas driving lights. This modified TF is now offered with an operation manual, a restoration guide, service records, spare and removed parts, various accessories, and a Vermont title in the seller’s name.

Finished from the factory in Ivory (P), the car has been repainted in red. The paint was touched up and freshened during the aforementioned refurbishment, according to the seller, and the rubber body seals and fender welting were replaced. Lucas 576 driving lights are affixed to the badge bar, and additional features include a black tonneau cover, fender-mounted side mirrors, a folding windshield, running boards, rear-hinged doors, and chrome bumpers. The seller notes that the folding black soft top is tattered and is missing the screws that hold its frame pivots.

The 15″ wire wheels have been sandblasted and painted black. The wheels have knock-off hubs and are mounted with Vredestein tires measuring 165HR15 86H; a matching spare is secured to the rear of the vehicle. An MGB 5/8” sway bar has been installed along with urethane control-arm and rear-spring bushings. The tie-rod ends have been replaced, and the front and rear shock absorbers were rebuilt during the refurbishment. The brakes have been overhauled with replacement of the shoes and hardware, wheel cylinders, fluid reservoir, and hoses.

The low-back bucket seats are trimmed in black upholstery that shows red coloring in worn areas. The interior panels and carpeting were replaced during the recent refurbishment work. Crow Safety Gear latch-and-link lap belts are fitted, and other interior appointments include a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a passenger-side grab handle, dual dashboard storage compartments, and door-panel map pockets.

The Derrington wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts Jaeger instrumentation consisting of a 105-mph speedometer with an inset clock, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and a combination gauge for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 2k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership; true mileage is unknown. The dashboard wiring harness has been replaced.

The 1.5-liter XPEG inline-four was rebuilt in 2021 and overbored to displace 1,548cc. The block and the milled cylinder head were Magnafluxed, and the internals were balanced. The engine is said to yield a compression ratio of 9.5:1, and it is augmented by the following components:

  • Moldex Crankshaft Co. forged-steel crankshaft
  • Saenz Performance forged connecting rods
  • Automotive Racing Products connecting-rod bolts
  • JE Pistons forged-aluminum 73.99mm pistons

Various event plaques from Florida and Georgia in the 1970s and 1980s are affixed to the toolbox lid in the engine bay, as is a tag from the 1989 MG Gathering of the Faithful in New Hampshire.
