Overview

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer full-size SUV has found its sweet spot. Available in either standard or long wheelbases—the latter denoted with an "L" suffix—all GWs rely on the velvety Hurricane 420-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six and an 8-speed automatic transmission for motivation. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is offered with either a full-time single-speed transfer case or a genuine two-speed unit with low-range for buyers interested in more adventurous overlanding.

Even the standard version, which, for perspective, is 4.8 inches longer than a Chevy Tahoe, offers room for up to eight passengers with the second-row bench—though we prefer the captain's chairs to better enjoy the luxury. Speaking of which, Jeep offers several trims and a host of options for perusal, allowing buyers to focus on utility or lean into luxury as their tastes dictate.

Expert Tip: If you need three rows of seats but maybe a smaller overall footprint, your options are wide open; Jeep fans, check out the Grand Cherokee L, but the Honda Pilot and Kia Telluride make convincing arguments too.

What's New for 2027?

After condensing the former convoluted two-tier "Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer" naming scheme into the less confusing single Grand Wagoneer moniker for 2026, the big GW rolls into 2027 with no changes.

Car value calculator

What's Your Car Worth?

Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Engine: 420-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder
  • Transmission: 8-speed automatic
  • Drivetrains: rear-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive

The standard engine is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing a stout 420 horsepower and backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. That's less than the 540-hp output in last year's Grand Wagoneer, but this lesser turbo-six nonetheless provides smooth and ample thrust. Rear-wheel drive is standard, four-wheel drive and a more sophisticated system with a two-speed transfer case are optional.

Air springs are optional on lower trims and standard on Summit models; they provide a smooth, controlled ride. The system can raise the Wagoneer to provide an additional 3.6 inches of ground clearance, and a drive-mode selector system includes sand/mud, snow, and rock modes. Despite all the robust off-road equipment, the Wagoneer's sheer size makes it less able to handle tight trails than the smaller Grand Cherokee or a Wrangler.

0–60-MPH Times

  • C/D 60-mph Test: 5.3 seconds

In Comparison: With its 420-hp I-6, the Grand Wagoneer's time is quicker than the Chevy Tahoe with its 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8, as well as faster to 60 than the Nissan Armada or the Toyota Sequoia.

Towing and Payload Capacity

  • Max Towing: 10,000 pounds

In Comparison: The Grand Wagoneer's 10,000-pound max trailer rating exceeds the Tahoe's (8100 pounds), the Armada's (8500), the Sequoia's (9100), and the Expedition's (9600).

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 22 mpg (Wagoneer)
  • EPA City Ratings: 16-17 mpg
  • EPA Highway Ratings: 22-24 mpg

According to the EPA, the rear-wheel drive Grand Wagoneer in both regular and long wheelbase sizes is good for 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. Adding four-wheel drive lowers the highway rating by 1 mpg to 23; the long wheelbase with four-wheel drive is the least efficient model and is rated for 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.

In our 75-mph highway fuel economy test, an all-wheel-drive 2025 Wagoneer delivered 22 mpg. For more information about the Grand Wagoneer's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

In Comparison: The Wagoneer's 22 mpg result in C/D's 75-mph highway test is impressive, as the Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia only managed 20 mpg in the same test.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: The Grand Wagoneer interior is spacious, and the wide center console has loads of storage. Switchgear includes plenty of physical buttons and is, happily, not overly dependent on touchscreens. Leather is standard, and ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof are available; upscale walnut trim and the top audio system are reserved for the Summit model.

Second Row: The Grand Wagoneer's three-row cabin comes standard with seating for seven, but all models can be optioned with a three-person second-row bench that increases the count to eight.

Third Row: Unlike many three-row SUVs, the Grand Wagoneer's back bench is suitable for adults or lanky teens. Know that the longer L version does not provide a roomier third row, only more luggage space behind it.

Cargo Capacity: Cargo space is generous, particularly with the third row folded. In our testing, we were able to fit seven carry-on suitcases behind the third row of the standard-wheelbase model and 14 behind the third row in the longer L version. With all seats folded, the standard-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer fit 40 suitcases, while the L held 56.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 10.1-inch touchscreen, 10.3-inch passenger touchscreen (optional), dual 10.1-inch rear-seat touchscreens (optional)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Audio System: 9-speaker Alpine stereo (standard), 19- or 23-speaker McIntosh stereo (optional)

The interior of the Grand Wagoneer is covered extensively by screens, with a 10.1-inch infotainment display taking center stage and a 10.3-inch (or optional 12.0-inch) digital gauge display offering readouts for the driver. The front-seat passenger can have their own display—an optional 10.3-inch unit—integrated into the dashboard that provides access to navigation and entertainment functions. A rear-seat entertainment system with dual 10.1-inch screens is also optional.

The company's Uconnect 5 software interface allows users to access all sorts of features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, integrated navigation, Amazon FireTV and Alexa, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The top stereo systems were developed with high-end audio equipment specialist McIntosh and feature 950 or 1375 watts of power. There are also three 12-volt power ports, a single 110-volt household outlet, and eight USB ports (11 with the rear seat entertainment package) scattered around the cabin.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Grand Wagoneer comes standard with several desirable driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and pedestrian detection.

  • Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control
  • Optional Safety Features: surround-view camera system, automated parking assist

For information about the Grand Wagoneer's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Jeep currently offers competitive, albeit unremarkable, limited and powertrain warranties.

  • Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: none

C/D Test Results and Specs

Each year, we put hundreds of vehicles through our rigorous instrumented testing regimen.

Note: While the test data in the chart below is for a Jeep Wagoneer, the company has now combined the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer into a single model line as they're one and the same vehicle. These test results thus remain accurate as the vehicle hasn't changed substantially since we last tested it.
