The live-action Naruto movie just took its biggest step forward in years. Lionsgate and director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed major plans for the highly anticipated adaptation’s next phase.
Lionsgate and director Destin Daniel Cretton have launched a global casting search for the live-action Naruto movie, according to a press release. The studio is seeking actors to play Team 7’s three young shinobi: Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Casting for additional characters will follow at a later stage.
Cretton announced the casting call through social media on Thursday. He expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the beloved franchise to life on the big screen. The director is also set to helm Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opens on July 31.
Cretton shared his excitement about the project in a statement. “Kishimoto-sensei’s stories have inspired generations of fans around the world, and it’s an honor to bring his world and characters to the big screen in live action for the very first time,” he said. “I’m thrilled to kick off this worldwide casting search for our Team 7 and to bring the incredible universe of Naruto to life!”
Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto also shared his reaction to the Hollywood adaptation. “Right now, miracles are happening to me, one after another. My work, Naruto, is truly, truly becoming a Hollywood movie!” he said. “And an even greater miracle is that the film will be directed by the one and only Destin Daniel Cretton. I still cannot believe it!” He added that he is “eagerly looking forward to the miraculous encounters that will bring us extraordinary and passionate actors.”
The live-action adaptation is currently heading into pre-production at Lionsgate. Naruto remains one of the world’s most popular manga franchises, having built a massive global fanbase. Kishimoto completed the manga’s original run back in 2022, yet the series continues to attract new audiences worldwide.
