Anthropic has confirmed that Claude Mythos 5, its most powerful AI cybersecurity model, will be redeployed to a select set of U.S. organizations responsible for operating and defending critical infrastructure, following a government-led review process that began on June 12, 2026.

Claude Mythos first made headlines in April 2026 when Anthropic described it as a potential “cybersecurity reckoning,” an AI model so capable that the company initially chose not to release it publicly.

The model demonstrated an unprecedented ability to autonomously discover software vulnerabilities, uncovering thousands of high-severity flaws across every major operating system and web browser.

Among its documented findings were a 27-year-old vulnerability in OpenBSD and a 16-year-old flaw in FFmpeg, along with chained Linux kernel exploits capable of full privilege escalation.

The model reportedly achieved a 72% success rate in generating working exploits and chaining vulnerabilities on the first attempt — compared to 0% from the previous Opus model.

Given these capabilities, Anthropic launched Project Glasswing, a closed, trusted-access program that restricted access to approximately 200 vetted organizations, including U.S. government agencies and major technology partners such as Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft. Anthropic committed up to $100 million in Claude usage credits to support the effort.

Mythos 5 to Be Redeployed

On June 12, 2026, Anthropic unexpectedly suspended access to both Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5 for all Glasswing partners. The company stated it was working closely with the U.S. government to investigate the disruption and restore access as quickly as possible.

The suspension left critical infrastructure defenders without access to the platform’s most advanced threat detection and vulnerability identification capabilities during the review window.

According to Anthropic, as of June 27, 2026, the U.S. government officially notified Anthropic that Claude Mythos 5 can be redeployed to a defined set of U.S. organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure.

Anthropic confirmed it is moving quickly to restore access for these validated entities. The company also stated it continues to work with the government toward a broader expansion of Mythos 5 access and the return of Claude Fable 5, its most capable general-use model for unrestricted use.

This development carries significant implications for the cybersecurity community. Defenders operating within critical sectors, including energy, healthcare, financial services, and telecommunications, will once again have access to a model capable of autonomously identifying zero-day vulnerabilities at machine speed.

The phased restoration signals a cautious but accelerating push by both Anthropic and the U.S. government to harness frontier AI capabilities for national cyber defense while keeping offensive dual-use risks tightly controlled.
