It depends on what metric you look at The global number of people without electricity has halved since 2000, but it has increased in Sub-Saharan Africa Which countries have fertility rates above or below the “replacement level”? Indoor air pollution causes almost three million premature deaths every year Death rates for cervical cancer in the United Kingdom have fallen by 80% since 1950 France’s nuclear fleet gives it one of the world’s lowest-carbon electricity grids Hunger levels have increased across Africa over the last decade Many countries are “leapfrogging” landlines and going straight to mobile phones The global suicide rate has fallen since the 1990s, but the death toll is still high Brazil, India, Vietnam, and Russia hold large reserves of rare earth, but mine very little of them China’s Great Leap Forward caused a dramatic spike in child deaths Estimates suggest that 45% of abortions globally are unsafe — but this varies widely across regions Mental health care is scarce everywhere — but in poor countries, it barely exists The world gets more seafood from aquaculture than wild catch Outside rich countries, widespread informal work means unemployment rates are low Coal power has effectively died in the United Kingdom Until fifty years ago, Argentina was richer than Spain In the 1980s, youth literacy was higher in Sub-Saharan Africa than in South Asia; it’s now the opposite Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world at the beginning of the 20th century The median age in China has rapidly caught up with the United Kingdom Smoking has already killed far more people this century than in the entire 20th century The world has made huge progress in reducing extreme poverty; could this be coming to an end? Australia is replacing coal and gas power with solar and wind
Hannah Ritchie, Pablo Arriagada · 2026-06-04 · via Our World in Data - Data Insights
Line chart of the share of electricity produced by each source in Australia from 1985 to 2025 where coal falls from over 80% to under 50% over about 25 years, gas rises in the 2000s and early 2010s, and solar and wind grow rapidly in the last decade with solar overtaking gas in 2023. At the turn of the millennium, Australia got more than 80% of its electricity from coal. This has dropped to less than 45%.

The chart shows how the country’s electricity mix has changed in recent decades.

In the 2000s and early 2010s, coal was initially replaced by gas, with only moderate growth in solar and wind. But in the last five years, solar and wind have been deployed much more quickly. Gas is now on the decline, too. In 2023, solar overtook gas to become Australia’s second-largest electricity source.

While coal is declining, it still supplies much more of Australia’s power than most high-income countries.
