How would you invite your neighbors to Linux-world?

1. Introduce some user-friendly distros.
2. Give an Arch-installed-PC as a gift. (+Wiki link or your own tips)
3. ...
...

I am just curious about the others' thoughts. ^-^

Make it clear I cannot and will not support them with their Window questions.

A great way to tell if someone might be interested in Linux is based on whether they use the internet or not.

People who are typically *online* in constrast to using the internet will probably not be interested in Linux. Except maybe for other purposes, like work

Re: How would you invite your neighbors to Linux-world?

1) Don't talk about Linux to new people never, or at least don't make the first suggestion of the talking.
2) If by some reason some person ask you, then  talk about it, with checking the interest of the person.
3) If the person seems interested enough and makes smart questions about it, talk about more. If not suggest NPC distro [Not ubuntu desktop] and go to another place in the conversation.
4) If the person really insist and really like the talking, then consider saying why not Arch in some part of the conversation.

That's it. Those who are worth it are going to find the "path" by themselves tongue. Don't feel pressure about sharing your tastes to others, that's cringe.

Re: How would you invite your neighbors to Linux-world?

I've been trying to solve a certain problem for years now.

With time, it has gotten even *more* complicated. A friend of mine knows about a possible solution wont provide any relevant input.

Oh, doesn't look like we're exactly friends, hey :-)

Their lack of concern is definitely tasteful.

Re: How would you invite your neighbors to Linux-world?

Step 1. Don't

Step 2. Don't.

Step 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

I would never ever give someone a PC with Arch pre-installed on it.

Re: How would you invite your neighbors to Linux-world?

actually I would already struggle with: how to introduce someone new to pc to tech in general anyway?
like in: my brother-in-law's family's kids are now at an age i already wasted nights in front of my pc - yet all they know are mobile devices like smartphones and tablets
none of them had a proper laptop in hands, yet - let alone sat in front of a full blown desktop
yes, they know what a computer is, but they haven't used one yet
back in the 90s when i grew up i played doom on win95 or a bit later age of empires (the first one) on 98 - and i can't really remember how my parents got me into it
so introducing someone new to tech in generell i guess it doesn't matter if windows, linux or mac - or if linux any difference between ubuntu and gentoo
kids assimilate knowledge extremely I would run out of ideas what to teach them within a week

hence i guess the question is: who are my neighbors? someone 40 years deep into tech old enough to remember c64 with cassettes? nothin to introduce here - hand them the wiki and off they go
or are we talkin about thier grant-kids just comming into school learning how to read?

Re: How would you invite your neighbors to Linux-world?

1. Befriend neighbour
2. Chat about life and work--mention how you enjoy not dealing with co-pilot because you use linux.
3. Neighbours computer breaks--mention to them that it is cheaper to get one without windows installed

Re: How would you invite your neighbors to Linux-world?

As System72 said, I wouldn't. You would become their tech support for life, and I honestly don't really like the idea. I would recommend it to some friend tho maybe if they're tech savvy enough but still are on windows.

Re: How would you invite your neighbors to Linux-world?

The "tech IQ" is dropping fast all over the world IMHO, "people" barely own PCs anymore. Everyone is sitting on phones or "iPad"s and well, they are inside either YouTube or Facebook or X or Instagram or Snapchat, that's basically what "Internet" means to most "people". *full vomit* Sadly, the rest of "Internet" is also mostly bots.

Also, if they asking you about Windows all the time, imagine the nightmare if you get them to install Linux. *lol*

It's like back in the days, when people asked me "how do I learn programming?", my answer was always "if you ask this question, then you shouldn't become a programmer", I think the same applies to Linux.

I don't mind it though, back in the days, "people" barely knew what a PC is. Now it's like those old days again! big_smile

Long story short.... F* 'em! tongue

Ps. A fitting song for this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LezoMi3yftM (Pink Floyd - Us and them)

Case in point: https://www.chronicle.com/article/my-students-cant-read

In a new essay for The Chronicle Higher Education, university-level literature and writing instructor Tyler Jagt recalls how not a single one of his students could get through an assigned 20-page article, something that he had read "without complaint" as an undergraduate a decade ago.
