When I was a kid, just after that in the 80s, there was a book series where the two main characters were friends who had coded their own custom word-processor on a home computer and used it to talk to ghosts.

Also Wargames came out in 84 about a computer taking over the national security apparatus and launching a nuclear war.

So I guess you could say there was a wide range of opinion about what these newfangled things were going to do to society.
