Tesla Recalls 2.2 Million Vehicles Over Autopilot Software Bug

Tesla has announced a voluntary recall of approximately 2.2 million vehicles in the United States due to a software issue affecting the Autopilot system's visual display warnings.

Affected Models:

  • Model S (2012-2024)
  • Model X (2016-2024)
  • Model 3 (2017-2024)
  • Model Y (2020-2024)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified that warning lights and messages displayed during Autopilot engagement may be too small to adequately alert drivers, potentially increasing crash risk.

The Problem

The issue centers on font sizes and icon visibility in the instrument cluster when Autopilot is active. During certain lighting conditions, drivers may not clearly see critical warnings about system limitations or when manual intervention is required.

Tesla's Response

"Safety is our top priority," said Tesla in an official statement. "This over-the-air software update will resolve the display issue within two weeks for all affected vehicles."

The recall is Tesla's fourth this year and affects nearly every vehicle the company has sold in the US market. Unlike traditional automotive recalls, Tesla can fix this issue remotely through its over-the-air update system.

Timeline

  • Recall announced: July 19, 2024
  • Software update rollout: July 22-August 5, 2024
  • No service center visits required

NHTSA continues investigating Tesla's Autopilot system following several high-profile accidents involving the semi-autonomous driving feature.

Tesla stock dropped 3.2% in after-hours trading following the announcement.
