5 ways Amazon is investing in Pennsylvania
Amazon Staff · 2026-06-20 · via Amazon News

Amazon's investments are boosting the Keystone State's economy while creating opportunities for Pennsylvanians.

Pittsburg, Pennsylvania

Key takeaways

  • Amazon has invested more than $40 billion in Pennsylvania since 2010, including infrastructure and employee compensation.
  • The company has more than 31,000 full- and part-time employees and supports more than 20,000 indirect jobs.
  • Amazon partners with 17 educational institutions in Pennsylvania through its Career Choice program and has upskilled over 4,700 employees since 2019.
  • Pennsylvania-based independent sellers sold more than 100 million items through Amazon's store.

Amazon’s roots in Pennsylvania run deep. Since first establishing operations in the state in 2004, the company has grown alongside Pennsylvania’s communities—from fulfillment centers in the Lehigh Valley to Whole Foods Market locations across the state to investments in upcoming cloud computing infrastructure.

Today, Pennsylvania is one of Amazon’s most significant hubs for logistics, innovation, and workforce development. The company’s more than $40 billion investment since 2010 has contributed more than $35 billion to the state’s gross domestic product, creating a ripple effect that extends well beyond Amazon’s own operations—supporting thousands of additional jobs in construction, logistics, and professional services, and helping local businesses reach customers around the world.

Here are five ways Amazon is investing in Pennsylvania:

1. Creating careers and competitive benefits for Pennsylvanians

Amazon provides competitive wages and comprehensive benefits from Day 1. Operations employees in customer fulfillment and transportation earn an average hourly base wage of more than $23, with total compensation averaging more than $30 an hour when including benefits.

These benefits include health, vision, and dental insurance starting on Day 1, free mental health resources, up to 20 weeks of fully paid parental leave, a 401(k), and flexible time-off options that increase with tenure.

Beyond more than 31,000 direct jobs, Amazon's presence in Pennsylvania supports more than 20,000 indirect jobs in industries such as construction, logistics, and professional services—suppliers and partners whom we rely on every day to serve customers across the Keystone State.

2. Preparing Pennsylvania's workforce for the future

Amazon is committed to preparing its workforce for future opportunities through comprehensive education and skills training programs.

Through Career Choice, Amazon prepays tuition for employees to earn certifications and degrees in high-demand fields, even outside of Amazon. More than 4,700 Amazon operations employees in Pennsylvania have participated in Career Choice at 17 college and university partners, from Community College of Philadelphia and Community College of Allegheny County to Penn State campuses across the commonwealth, creating pathways to in-demand careers in the local job market.

Recently, Amazon and Carnegie Mellon University also announced an AI Innovation Hub that will advance research in generative AI, robotics, natural-language processing and cloud computing.

3. Powering Pennsylvania's infrastructure and cloud economy

Since 2010, Amazon has invested more than $40 billion in Pennsylvania's infrastructure and employee compensation. This includes more than $3.7 billion in data center investments, reinforcing the state's growing importance in cloud computing and AI infrastructure.

Amazon’s physical footprint across the Keystone State includes 25 fulfillment and sortation centers, 21 delivery stations, three rural super rural (RSR) delivery stations, a Prime Now fulfillment center, and other facilities. The company has also expanded its retail footprint with 16 Whole Foods Market locations across Pennsylvania.

Amazon continues to grow its sustainable infrastructure as well, with 13 solar farms and a site with on-site solar power across the state. Pennsylvania is also home to an AWS Infrastructure Region supporting businesses and organizations throughout the state and beyond.

4. Helping Pennsylvania's small businesses reach the world

Amazon provides a powerful opportunity for Pennsylvania's entrepreneurs and small businesses to reach customers worldwide. Pennsylvania-based independent sellers—primarily small and medium-sized businesses—sold more than 100 million items through Amazon's store, with the average seller generating more than $305,000 in annual sales.

These independent sellers represent more than 60% of sales in Amazon's store. Their success contributes significantly to local economies, with more than 65% of U.S. independent sellers employing at least one person within 50 miles of their primary business location.

By providing infrastructure, logistics support, and access to millions of customers, Amazon enables Pennsylvania's small businesses to scale their operations and create additional jobs throughout the state.

5. Strengthening communities across the Keystone State

Amazon uses its global scale and strengths to make a positive impact in communities. Working with trusted community partners, we address critical needs—food security, education, disaster relief—using our logistics, technology, and innovation, while investing as a good neighbor in the communities where our employees live and work.
