Mark Zuckerberg Orders His Employees Have Fun Again – After Devastating Layoffs Hit Their Colleagues
Rex Freiberger · 2026-06-18 · via Gadget Review

After cutting 8,000 jobs and drawing a 1,600-person surveillance petition, Zuckerberg’s July hackathon falls flat with exhausted staff

Weeks after watching 8,000 colleagues get escorted out, Meta’s remaining workforce received a peculiar assignment from Mark Zuckerberg: enjoy yourselves. A company-wide memo acknowledged the company “made mistakes and will almost certainly make more” in its AI transformation, according to Reuters. The remedy? A three-day AI hackathon scheduled for July 14–16, more offsites, and a promise to rebuild “hacker culture.” The prescription landed like a wellness seminar at a funeral.

Here’s what Meta employees are actually navigating right now:

  • May layoffs eliminated roughly 8,000 jobs — about 10% of the global workforce — while approximately 7,000 employees got reassigned into AI roles
  • Over 1,600 workers signed a petition protesting click and keystroke monitoring programs used to generate AI training data
  • Engineers describe Meta’s Applied AI unit as a “soul-crushing gulag,” per TechCrunch, with some told to join or quit
  • Hackathon participation reportedly won’t count toward performance reviews
  • Zuckerberg offered employees permanent desks, ending the hot-desk system, and promised no further company-wide layoffs this year

When “Hacker Culture” Meets a Headcount Reduction

The gap between what leadership is calling a cultural revival and what employees are actually experiencing could not be wider.

Internal messages paint a workforce that sees the hackathon not as a gift but as uncompensated overtime dressed up with snacks. “I’m literally preoccupied with keeping the lights on for my team,” one employee wrote in comments reported by Wired. “I have no incentive to participate, let alone have the time to do so.” Another was blunter: “I’m not sure that this company supports a hackathon culture anymore.” Both quotes capture something the memo missed entirely — trust, once spent, doesn’t refill on a calendar invite.

The permanent desk offer deserves its own moment. Getting your own desk — something most office workers never think twice about — repackaged as a morale perk lands as tone-deaf when thousands of your former colleagues just lost theirs for good. That’s the equivalent of a restaurant halving its kitchen staff and handing the survivors new aprons while calling it an investment in team culture.

Zoom out and the pattern extends well beyond Menlo Park. Engineers who once built products are now generating coding puzzles to train AI models. That structural shift is the real story. Zuckerberg’s admission that mistakes happened reads less like genuine contrition and more like the note left on the whiteboard after a sprint retrospective nobody wanted to attend — a pre-emptive disclaimer for whatever restructuring arrives next.

Hackathons genuinely shaped early Meta. That history is real, and worth acknowledging. But you don’t restore culture by scheduling it. When 1,600 employees are signing petitions about keystroke surveillance while being asked to code for fun on top of existing sprint deliverables, the problem isn’t the calendar — it’s the conditions that made signing that petition feel necessary in the first place.
