The Washington Wizards acquired Anthony Davis from the Dallas Mavericks at the trade deadline as part of a three-team deal. Davis has yet to make his debut for the Wizards due to a lingering hand injury.

Davis has only played 20 games this season, all for the Mavs, because of multiple injuries. He dealt with a calf injury early in the campaign before a groin issue around Christmas. He averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks.

The 10-time All-Star was finally looking healthy before suffering a left hand injury on January 9 against the Utah Jazz. He was never cleared to return this season, so he’s likely making his Wizards debut next season.

Anthony Davis Gives Wizards Harsh Reality Check

Speaking to Craig Melvin on the Glass Half Full podcast, Anthony Davis opened up about his early life and basketball career.

Melvin asked Davis about his thoughts on playing for the Wizards, a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2018. The Wizards have also won a combined 50 games in the last three seasons.

“When you’re looking at the Washington Wizards from the outside looking in, everybody’s right,” Davis said, via HoopsHype. “But when you get into the organization and see how great of an organization it is, the owner is amazing. Obviously, the city, D.C. is amazing. We are a very bad basketball team, for sure.”

While it was a harsh reality check for the Wizards from Davis, the former Los Angeles Lakers star believes the current roster has what it takes to succeed.

“I think it’s very tough to go from a bad team to a championship contender,” Davis said. “It takes time, and that’s with anybody. I mean, it could be a team who’s just won and then is suddenly not good. So it takes time. It takes a couple of years.”

In addition to Davis, the Wizards also acquired Trae Young back in January. The team has two veteran All-Stars surrounded by a bunch of very young core hungry for success.

Anthony Davis Eligible for Contract Extension

There are two years left on Anthony Davis’ current contract with the Wizards, with a player option for the 2027-28 NBA season. It means that Davis is eligible to sign an extension this offseason.

According to The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie on his Game Theory podcast, the Wizards should not give Davis a new contract.

“The AD things is the one that’s really interesting to me because he does have like the extra year and I would imagine he wants an extension because like this is probably his last chance at a real extension,” Vecenie said, via Wiz of Awes on FanSided. “They should not do that. Like there’s just no reason or answer to do that in my opinion right now given his injury history.”

Davis’ durability has always been in question due to his injury history. He has only played a combined 71 games in the past two seasons.
