James Harden #1 of the Cleveland Cavaliers

James Harden is having a hard time shaking his personal playoff narrative.

During the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, Harden has struggled to make a positive impact through two games against the Detroit Pistons. With turnover woes, shooting struggles, and a lack of positive defense, Harden hasn’t helped his team enough to avoid a 0-2 hole.

After Game 1, Harden acknowledged his struggles publicly. He was sure that the issues from Game 1 could be cleared up in the second outing.

“You know, for me, I got to be better. I will be better turning the basketball over. From turning the basketball over and getting shots up, and then it gives our defense a chance to get back and get set,” Harden said following Game 1. “Other than that, I think we played a pretty solid game.”

Harden’s follow-up performance wasn’t inspiring. In fact, the star guard made bad history.

via ESPN Insights: “James Harden finished Game 2 with 10 PTS on 3-of-13 shooting, including just 2 points in the 2nd half.

This was Harden’s 20th playoff game in which he shot 25% or less (min. 10 FGA), breaking a tie with Bob Cousy for the most such playoff games in the shot-clock era (since 1954-55).”

The Cavaliers rolled out Harden for 37 minutes on Thursday night. He had 10 points on 3-12 shooting and missed all four of his shots from beyond the arc. Four of his points came from the free-throw line.

Harden came down with six rebounds, dished out three assists, and snatched one steal. Unfortunately, he had more turnovers than baskets and assists, registering four on the night.

The Cavs Are Falling Way Behind

History says going down 0-3 means that any win for the losing team after that is just delaying the inevitable.

Therefore, the Cavaliers are going home and immediately facing a must-win scenario. In Game 2, the Cavaliers dropped the matchup with a 107-97 loss. They are now trailing 0-2 in the series.

The last thing a 36-year-old James Harden needs is a second-round flameout. Unfortunately, that’s where the postseason is headed for the Cavaliers.

Back in February, the Cavaliers viewed Harden as the final piece to the puzzle. They swapped out Darius Garland for the former MVP ahead of the trade deadline. Harden concluded his third year with the Los Angeles Clippers early to get to Cleveland.

While the regular season was inspiring, and the first round of the playoffs turned out to be enough, the Cavaliers are struggling to look like Eastern Conference contenders once again.
