The Los Angeles Lakers are in the middle of a playoff run. Despite not having two key starters for most of their first-round series against the Rockets, they were able to beat them. Now, they will take on the Oklahoma City Thunder.

One of the reasons they beat the Rockets is because of the play of Luke Kennard. Kennard was thrust into a starting role with both Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic out. Kennard played extremely well. More than that, he was an excellent bench player for most of the season.

Now, it looks like Los Angeles is ready to keep Kennard long-term once this season is over.

Los Angeles Lakers Reportedly Looking to Re-Sign Luke Kennard

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Lakers are going to try to re-sign Kennard in the offseason. Fischer mentions that it is “increasingly anticipated leaguewide” that the Lakers will pursue that route with Kennard. Kennard was traded to the Lakers at the trade deadline.

During the regular season, Kennard was an excellent shooter for Los Angeles. Kennard led the NBA in 3-point percentage during the regular season, making 47.8 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. That is something that Los Angeles desperately needs.

In the first round against the Rockets, Kennard showed more than just his outside shooting. He was able to drive to the hoop and make layups, as well. Of course, bringing Kennard back might not be easy. He will likely have multiple suitors in what will be a soft free agent class.

Kennard will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer. He is currently on a one-year deal worth $11 million. Kennard will likely be a target of multiple teams that need outside shooting. Still, the Lakers will try to bring him back on a fair deal for both parties.

Los Angeles Needs Luke Kennard to Produce in the Playoffs

If the Lakers are going to upset the Thunder, they need Kennard to play at a high level. Doncic will still be out for the beginning of the series, so they need Kennard’s shooting. His ability to make shots from beyond the 3-point line will be a weapon they have to utilize.

LeBron James will still be a big part of what the Lakers want to do offensively, although Reaves will be the top option now that he has returned. Still, the 41-year-old is going to be a big part of the team’s success if they are going to pull a major upset.

The minutes that Kennard plays are going to be huge, especially against the Thunder’s bench. Outside shooting is how the Pacers came very close to beating Oklahoma City in the NBA Finals a year ago. Los Angeles will have a similar game plan if they want to advance.
