Knicks Choose Alvarado in Playoff Rotation Shift

The New York Knicks didn’t just tweak a rotation. They made a decision that could shape the outcome of this series.

According to the New York Daily News, head coach Mike Brown has turned to Jose Alvarado over Landry Shamet in the playoff rotation. That choice says less about box scores and more about trust under pressure.

Because when the Knicks lost control of games early in this series, Brown didn’t look for more shooting. He looked for someone who could steady everything.

And right now, that player is Alvarado.

The Knicks Didn’t Need Scoring. They Needed Control

This decision came from a problem that could not be ignored.

The Knicks were getting thrown off rhythm. Lineups were shifting. Possessions were breaking down. The offense looked rushed instead of intentional.

Brown admitted the team needed a true point guard presence when things started to spiral. That is where Alvarado stepped in.

He did not just bring energy. He organized the floor. He slowed the tempo. He gave the Knicks structure when the game started to speed up.

That is the difference in a playoff series.

Shamet offers spacing and shooting. But when possessions matter most, decision-making becomes more valuable than shot-making. Brown chose control over volatility.

And once a coach finds that in the playoffs, it is difficult to walk it back.

Alvarado Turned an Opportunity Into a Role

This shift did not come from a long-term plan.

Alvarado was not part of the late-season rotation. He did not play in Game 1. He entered the series as a situational option.

Then the moment arrived.

He stayed ready. He delivered immediately. He earned another chance. Then another.

Brown made it clear this was about performance in real time. The playoffs force quick decisions, and Alvarado answered every one of them.

That is how roles change in April and May.

Not through reputation. Not through contracts. Through execution when the pressure is highest.

Now the Knicks are no longer experimenting. They are leaning into what works.

What This Means for Shamet and the Series

For Shamet, the message is direct.

His minutes dropped each game. His role faded when the stakes increased. That reflects a coaching staff adjusting to what this series demands.

This is not about failure. It is about fit.

The Knicks need someone who can handle chaos, not just space the floor. They need a player who can make decisions in tight windows and keep the offense connected.

Alvarado checks those boxes right now.

That changes the texture of the series.

If Alvarado continues to stabilize second-unit minutes, the Knicks gain consistency in games that have already swung on small details. If that stability holds, it could be the difference between surviving this round and falling short.

Brown left the door open for changes. But playoff trust is fragile. Once it shifts, it rarely resets.

The Knicks made their call.

Now the question is whether it becomes the move that defines their postseason.
