The center position has remained a persistent question mark for the Los Angeles Lakers in recent years, with no long-term solution firmly taking hold.

Even the addition of former No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton last offseason has failed to fully stabilize the role, leaving the expectation that Los Angeles will once again explore frontcourt reinforcements this summer.

ESPN’s Kevin Pelton recently highlighted center as a priority area for the Lakers, suggesting further changes could be on the horizon regardless of Ayton holding an $8.1 million player option.

Lakers Expected to Explore Frontcourt Market Amid Cap Flexibility

The Lakers are positioned to enter the offseason with significant financial flexibility, as multiple contracts are set to come off the books, including LeBron James’ $52.6 million salary, which could open up close to $50 million in cap space.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin has reported that Los Angeles is not expected to pursue another marquee star outside of James, who could still return on a more team-friendly deal.

Instead, the organization is likely to focus on retaining key contributors such as Austin Reaves, Luke Kennard, and backup center Jaxson Hayes.

Pelton has identified New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson and Portland Trail Blazers big man Robert Williams III as “realistic possibilities” on the open market.

Another name that has circulated over the past year is Nick Richards, who has spent time with the Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns, and Chicago Bulls across the last two seasons.

Richards is currently in the final year of a $15 million deal, earning $5 million in the 2025-26 season, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

His profile could make him an affordable option for teams seeking frontcourt depth.

LA Urged to Avoid Short-Term Fix in Nick Richards

Across 48 games this season split between the Suns and Bulls, Richards averaged 5.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and just under a block per game, while shooting 51.2% from the field.

However, not everyone is convinced he is the right fit for Los Angeles.

Lake Show Life’s Svyatoslav Rovenchuk believes the Lakers should look beyond Richards, despite previous links to the organization.

“One name who will be available among a list of options is Nick Richards, someone who has previously been tied to the organization,” Rovenchuk wrote. “Rob Pelinka should have bigger aspirations at this point.”

“Richards could have been fine as a patchwork solution when the Lakers frontcourt looked worse than it is now. However, being a temporary fix for a pressing need is what got him to Chicago. His time with the Bulls left a lot to be desired.”

“In a pinch, there are far worse centers out there than Richards. Luka Doncic can realistically get a lot out of anyone at that spot, too. Even so, placing duct tape over a massive crack in the foundation should not be the goal for this offseason.”

Rovenchuk added that the Lakers should prioritize finding a long-term partner in the frontcourt alongside Doncic, rather than settling for a short-term solution.

He pointed to restricted free agent options such as Jalen Duren and Walker Kessler, as well as Isaiah Hartenstein, who could become available depending on his team option.

The NBA Draft also presents another pathway, offering a cost-controlled route to address the position long-term.

Prospects such as Patrick Ngongba, Motiejus Krivas, and Aday Mara have all been linked to the Lakers in recent mock drafts and could be available late in the first round.
