New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby smiles from the bench during the playoffs as questions continue to surround his potential return for Game 3 against the Philadelphia 76ers after suffering a hamstring strain in Game 2.

Did ESPN just very quietly leak the New York Knicks‘ likely date for OG Anunoby to return? A new posting ahead of Game 3 against the Philadelphia 76ers may have offered an indication about whether the Knicks forward is expected to play Friday night, though ESPN notes that Anunoby is a game-time decision.

The official NBA injury report lists Anunoby as “questionable” after suffering a right hamstring strain late in Game 2, but ESPN’s framing of the situation immediately fueled speculation among Knicks fans that the team could already have a target date in mind for his return.

OG Anunoby Injury Status and ESPN’s Posting

The ESPN game page for Friday’s Game 3 matchup listed Anunoby’s estimated return date as May 8 — tonight. That is not a confirmation he will suit up, but it is a data point that could jolt the Knicks fanbase, given the credibility of the source.

Anunoby went down with 3:06 remaining in New York’s 108-102 Game 2 win Wednesday night, grabbing at the back of his right leg during a cut before signaling to the bench to come out. He did not return. The team announced a right hamstring strain diagnosis and listed him as questionable for Game 3, according to CBS Sports‘ Jasmyn Wimbish.

Early indications from inside the organization trended positive. A source described the strain as “very, very minor” to The New York Post‘s Stefan Bondy, with no expectation of a lengthy absence. SNY’s Ian Begley separately reported genuine optimism in the locker room that Anunoby would be available for either Game 3 or Game 4.

OG Anunoby’s Numbers Make Status Critical for Knicks

The stakes around Anunoby’s availability are high. He is averaging 21.5 points per game in the 2026 postseason while shooting 61% from the field, and his plus-minus, tied with Jalen Brunson for the best mark of any player in the entire postseason, underscores how completely his presence anchors New York’s defensive structure, according to Yahoo Sports‘ Dan Devine.

Anunoby scored 24 points on 9-for-17 shooting in 37 minutes in Game 2 before exiting. He added five rebounds and four steals, and the Knicks outscored Philadelphia by 12 points with him on the court.

“He’s one of the best two-way players in the league, so it’s tough to replace that,” Miles McBride said after Game 2. “But you don’t replace him with one guy. Everyone is going to have to step up.”

What a 3-0 New York Knicks Lead Would Mean

New York leads the Eastern Conference semifinals 2-0, meaning a win tonight would push the Sixers to the brink of elimination. No team in NBA playoff history has ever recovered from a 3-0 series deficit, a streak 157 series long, according to Sports Illustrated‘ Madison Williams. The closest any club has come was the 2023 Eastern Conference finals, when the Boston Celtics forced a Game 7 before ultimately falling to the Miami Heat.

Anunoby’s hamstring history adds a layer of caution. A left hamstring strain cost him Games 3 through 6 of the 2024 Eastern Conference semifinals. The Knicks will not rush him if pregame workouts leave any doubt. But with Philadelphia already managing a less-than-healthy Joel Embiid, listed as a game-time decision with an ankle issue, New York’s incentive to have its best two-way player on the floor tonight has never been greater.
