Steve Kerr denied the rumors surrounding his relationship with the Warriors

The Golden State Warriors know that they are entering an important offseason of work after they missed the playoffs entirely this year. The first order of business involved figuring out what the future held for head coach Steve Kerr, and that ended up getting resolved last week when he agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Warriors.

For a point in time, it seemed more likely that Kerr would not be returning to Golden State, but the two sides were able to mend fences and come to an agreement on their vision for the team moving forward. Before Kerr put pen to paper on his new deal, rumors suggested that some tension existed between the legendary head coach and the Dubs due to his outspoken political views, but they were officially put to rest on Friday afternoon.

Steve Kerr Buries Rumors of Tension Between Him and the Warriors

Kerr has been in charge of the Warriors since 2014, and he’s helped turn them into the latest dynasty in the NBA, leading the team to four championships during his time in town. However, in recent years, the front office has struggled to build a proper winner around Stephen Curry, and it’s made Kerr’s job increasingly difficult.

The 2025-26 campaign was a slog, as Curry missed more than half of the regular season with a lingering right knee injury, while his partner-in-crime, Jimmy Butler, suffered a season-ending torn ACL in January. Kerr did his best to piece things together, but as the year went on, more and more rumors continued to suggest that his stint with Golden State could be coming to an end.

Instead, Kerr recommitted himself to the franchise for at least two more years, despite what all the reports continued to say about him. One of the aforementioned rumors suggested that Golden State wanted to move on from Kerr, in part because of his habit of frequently speaking about his political views. When asked whether or not that’s an issue moving forward, Kerr bluntly put that train of thought to rest.

“Steve Kerr says his political stance and how he speaks his mind ‘literally’ never came (up) in talks with Joe Lacob and Mike Dunleavy,” Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area shared in a post on X.

With Kerr sticking in town, the Warriors have made it clear that they intend on trying to squeeze one more championship out of him and Curry before they both eventually move on. Now that he’s staying, though, the front office is going to have to find a way to properly surround Curry with talent, and in the process, give Kerr a team that he can lead to wins.

The hard work is only just getting started, as Golden State will now have to figure out how to properly construct its roster this offseason. That could involve moving on from longtime defensive stalwart Draymond Green, whose future is also up in the air this offseason. The Warriors have put a firm timeline on Kerr’s time in town, and the next few months will likely play a big role in determining just how successful his final two years with the team will be.
