Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is one of the most successful and highly-decorated coaches in NBA history. Kerr has won four NBA titles as a head coach and a gold medal, and he was named one of the top 15 coaches in NBA history by the league.

However, he wasn’t especially impressive to non-Warriors players during the 2025-26 season.

In this year’s edition of The Athletic’s anonymous player poll, Kerr was voted as one of the least impressive coaches in the entire NBA.

100 total players voted in the poll and Kerr received six percent of the vote, which was the fourth-most league-wide behind Washington Wizards head coach Brian Keefe (22 percent), recently-departed Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers (14 percent) and Sacramento Kings coach Doug Christie (10 percent). Directly behind Kerr on the poll was former Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan and Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse (both five percent).

Keep in mind, players weren’t permitted to vote for their own coach in the poll, so all of these votes came from players on other teams.

Historically, the former Team USA coach has been one of the most lauded in our player polls. So it was somewhat surprising that 6.0 percent of respondents voted for Kerr as “least impressive” coach.

This season, however, Golden State faced injuries to Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry and went 37-45. Kerr also faced criticism for Jonathan Kuminga falling out of the Warriors’ rotation and not meeting expectations.

“I think he’s a great coach,” one of the players who voted for Kerr said. “I just thought the way he handled the Kuminga situation wasn’t very smart.”

Steve Kerr’s Future with the Golden State Warriors

Kerr faces an uncertain future in Golden State as he’s no longer under contract with the Warriors. However, the legendary coach left the door open for a possible return with recent comments about not wanting to walk away from Warriors stars Steph Curry and Draymond Green.

“I don’t want to abandon those guys,” Kerr said. “If Steph and Draymond were retiring this year, I think this would be an easy decision: we all go out together and the organization takes their new path. But it’s not that easy because I think Steph’s going to play another couple of years and I think we can still do some good things together.

“But these are all conversations that will happen in the next week or two and we’ll figure it out. And whatever happens, it’s going to end well. I know that, because it’s too important not to.”

It’s now been a few weeks since the Warriors were officially eliminated from playoff contention, so we should be getting some insight into Kerr’s future in Golden State in the near future.
