Knicks get Major OG Anunoby News
Through the first two rounds, the New York Knicks have been the best team so far in the 2026 playoffs. However, if the Eastern Conference Finals get underway by May 17 at the latest, the same old worry will be reintroduced.
Beat reporter Kristian Winfield shared a video on X showing OG Anunoby shooting free throws after Knicks practice on May 15. The key detail: Anunoby was not in uniform, and the session happened after the rest of the team had already finished.
That is not a return to practice. That is a player still in the early stages of his recovery work.
Free throws are the simplest kind of shooting exercise, as they involve very little lateral movement and almost no physical exertion. Anunoby still has a few things to do before he can be cleared, such as movement shooting, movement drills, contact situations, one-on-one, and team scrimmage work. A free-throw session after practice does not meet any of those conditions.

The Cavaliers and Pistons play Game 6 tonight, with a potential Game 7 on May 17. If Cleveland closes it out tonight, the ECF could start May 17. That leaves Anunoby with almost no time to work through his full protocol.

This is not just a scoring concern. Anunoby has been the Knicks’ best two-way player in these playoffs, putting up 21.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.9 steals across his eight games.
Against Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden are a handful for any defense. Anunoby is the one Knick capable of disrupting either of them on a consistent basis. Asking someone else to carry that assignment in an ECF without reps is a real problem.

The Knicks recorded an 8-2 win-loss record in the first two rounds by defeating the Atlanta Hawks in six games and then sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers.
Jalen Brunson is putting up 27.4 points per game. Karl-Anthony Towns has been dominating when he is not sidelined by foul problems. Mikal Bridges looks like his old self again. This team is equipped to keep winning even if things go badly.
But last season they lost to the Indiana Pacers in the conference finals, and the Knicks know the difference between winning with Anunoby and winning without him. Everyone else watching does too.
Practicing free throws after the main session is an improvement. However, it is just not sufficient, and time is ticking.
